And so I think people are pissed off about it, and they should be. It’s wrong. This is a complete theft of our money. This is what I want people to understand: this is our money. Jeffries: The continuing effort by Donald Trump and the Republicans to shut down the federal government is because they want to continue their effort to gut the healthcare of the American people. We’ve been very clear that we will sit down and work on a bipartisan bill to try to reach a spending agreement that meets the needs of the American people—which includes protecting their healthcare in the face of the unrelenting attacks on everyday Americans. Largest cut to Medicaid in American history. Hospitals, nursing homes, and community-based health clinics—including those in rural America—are shutting down because of what they did in that one big ugly budget bill. The Affordable Care Act is under assault by these Republicans because they are unwilling to renew the tax credits that make healthcare affordable for 20 million Americans. At the same time, we know they are attacking medical research, attacking cancer research, and attacking our public health infrastructure—and they are potentially going to trigger a $536 billion cut to Medicare because of what they did in that one big ugly bill, if Congress doesn’t act soon. What that means right now, as we come to the end of the year, is that literally hundreds of thousands of people are going to go on the exchanges in their state to choose what health care they want for next year—and all of them are going to see a giant increase in their costs. I talked to one family that’s paying about $300 a month right now for their health insurance. It’s going to jump to, I believe, over $1,800 per month. Can you imagine what’s going to happen when people go online and see they’ll have to pay exorbitant amounts for their health care? They won’t be able to afford it. Many of them will turn away and not pay for it—obviously, they’ll lose their health insurance. And as we know from the old Obamacare discussions, the fewer people who have insurance under our current system, the more everybody pays.
