Christianity as a religion is entirely spiritual, occupied solely with heavenly things; the country of the Christian is not of this world. He does his duty, indeed, but does it with profound indifference to the good or ill success of his cares. Provided he has nothing to reproach himself with, it matters little to him whether things go well or ill here on earth. If the State is prosperous, he hardly dares to share in the public happiness, for fear he may grow proud of his country's glory; if the State is languishing, he blesses the hand of God that is hard upon His people.... If the power is abused by him who wields it, it is the scourge wherewith God punishes His children. There would be scruples about driving out the usurper: public tranquility would have to be disturbed, violence would have to be employed, and blood spilt; all this accords ill with Christian meekness; and after all, in this vale of sorrows, what does it matter whether we are tree men or serfs? The essential thing is to get to heaven, and resignation is only an additional means of doing so... Christianity preaches only servitude and dependence. Its spirit is so favourable to tyranny that it always profits by such a régime. True Christians are made to be slaves, and they know it and do not much mind: this short life counts for too little in their eyes. - Phil Johnson or Jean-Jacques Rousseau?

He's almost fat enough to catch up with that ridiculously wide stage prop. So he's apparently suffering no persecution. At any rate, every "big name preacher" is a scripted actor seeking White genocide, so always use that as a test of these guys. It never fails.

Musing On Coffee 的头像

You're a liar. Pointing out an example where the church thrives under persecution doesn't mean that communism is better, nor that we should seek out first century executions, Papal tyranny, Chinese imprisonment, Muslim slavery, rape, and murder.

So is this the argument? The church historically thrives under persecution therefore Christians governing is bad because less persecution = less thriving and less evangelism?

@EvangelicalDW made this point, but if correct, he may have accidentally demonstrated that liberal democracy is more detrimental to Christianity than communism.

The church does not expand under catacomb Christianity - and yes Phil boy, why did the west suddenly start to dechristianize after the war? HMMMM? Are you going to go there at all?

And the "christianity that flourished" was in reality state-sanctioned orthodoxy, not evangelicalism. MacArthur would have been goulag'd in Russia.

Silver Fox 的头像
Silver Fox11 天前

He didn’t say that. He’s making the point, which should be obvious if your listening , and is verified historically - that God has caused the gospel to flourish under persecution and diminish under times of freedom and prosperity. Every so called Christian crusade has ended in failure and been thrown onto the historical ash heap of man’s ideas. This is Gods doing.

Which situation would you choose for your children to live under?

Silver Fox 的头像
Silver Fox11 天前

In the flesh? I would want them to marry, have many children, enjoy great health, hold an impressive high paying job, live to be a hundred and maybe even invent a cure for cancer. In reality - that is biblically speaking, I want them to faithfully honor God until death whatever their lot in this life. The Apostles considered it all joy when they were beaten and tormented for their faith. The greatest saints throughout history were made not in times of ease and plenty, but through unimaginable hardships. Gods ways are not my ways my friend.

Phil stands in a Church that seats thousands that is connected to a university that has over 3000 students all built through John Macarthur preaching the gospel. He cannot see the immense hypocrisy between where he is standing and what he is saying.

Messianic Mouse 的头像
Messianic Mouse11 天前

The point is the Gospel thrives and grows under adversity. People see no need for God in the luxury of life. He is just pointing out how the Gospel advanced under evil rule. Much like it did in the early congregations under Rome.

I understand what Phil is getting at....Christianity will thrive under persecution. However, we are to Christianize our nation. A Christian nation is part of our mission. Kinda a weird point to make tbh.

Mark James 的头像

Phil didn't say that at all. He said Christianity thrived under the Iron Curtain. That isn't to say communism is better. You are so determined to see something outrageous that you are willing to make it up.

I'm so grateful I came across this post so that I can now Mark and avoid you. Not just because of the post was taken purposely out of context, but the comments that you're leaving are a great example of showing how a "Christian" can be Christian in just name only sometimes

He's pointing out a very well known statistic. Anytime throughout history when the church has been persecuted it has grown significantly.

Ron Cross 的头像

You can see it throughout history. Stephen being stoned was the first catalyst that helped the church grow. Happened again when Rome started persecuting them. He for sure didn't say he thinks communisim is better.

Soviets destroyed thousands of churches and murdered millions of Christians. The numbers still haven't recovered. And N Africa? The place that used to be a bastion of Christianity? Who's going strong there right now?
