He was the multimillionaire software visionary that created the Zip file format still used almost universally to this day. And now, at the age of just 37, Phil Katz was dead. His life came to an inglorious ending in a lonely hotel room somewhere in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. He had a home nearby, and the cops had been summoned to it at least once before when neighbors complained of odors, insects, and mice infesting the neighboring luxury apartments. Once inside, the police were confronted with knee-deep garbage, decaying food scraps, and much more. When they later found his lifeless body slumped against a nightstand in that dingy south side hotel room, he was still cradling an empty bottle of liquor. A half dozen similar bottles littered the room. He was completely alone now, having long since been estranged from his family and now virtually a stranger even to the employees of his own company. His body could no longer sustain the abuse from years of chronic alcoholism, and he died alone that night of acute pancreatic bleeding. The Dark History of Zip Files: you might already know that I wrote the Zip file support that's been in Windows for about 30 years... But I had nothing to do with the creation of the Zip format, which goes back to Phil Katz. This is his tragic and cautionary tale... as told by me. I never met Phil before he died. I'd like to think that before he started his descent into darkness, we'd have a lot to talk about.

Prior to the release of "Rabid" (1977), David Cronenberg was asked to vacate the house by his Landlady because she thought he made p0rn0gr@phic movies. After reading an article in the newspaper that included some "Nastier bits" of a review of "Shivers" (1975) written by Robert Fulford, the landlady was convinced that Cronenberg was a director who made "That" sort of movies. When Cronenberg asked her "what sort is "That" sort?", she replied "The p0rn0gr@phic sort". Cronenberg tried to make her understand that he made "Horror" movies but she was convinced that the newspaper "The Global and Mail" would not print a misleading article & it had clearly stated "Shivers" was obscene. Moreover, she didn't want to be associated with a p0rn0gr@phic actress like Marilyn Chambers. She told him that she had been working quietly against p0rn0gr@phy with a league of women for many years. She also added that it was nothing "personal" and asked him to vacate the house within the end of the night. Cronenberg told the landlady that it was in fact very personal, and that he was very personally insulted, and that he will personally approach the Human Rights Commission before leaving. But 10 minutes after the Landlady left, Cronenberg arranged to occupy the house opposite to the Landlady's which had been up for sale for some weeks. He bought the house a few days later. Three days before he shifted to the new home, City Zoning inspector visited his house as there had been an anonymous complaint filed against him for "Photographing and developing of p0rn0gr@phic motion picture films for public sale". He said to the inspector that he knew who filed the complaint and allowed him to search. The inspector did not find anything incriminating. Waa! Apparently, this is a grave, and the guy died just a week ago. He was buried as if he had never existed. The man was a drunkard. He was hit by a vehicle on the road. This is a tradition among the Kabras, but I hear that most Luhyas and Luos also practice it. His burial service was held while his body was still in the mortuary. After the people went home, the elders brought his body and buried him quietly. Children and even men under 30 who had no children were not allowed to be present during the lowering of the body. Grass was planted on the grave to make it look like nothing had ever happened there. The next day, all his clothes and belongings were donated. This is done to help the community forget him and to ward off such kinds of deaths in the future.

After the people went home, the elders brought his body and buried him quietly. Children and even men under 30 who had no children were not allowed to be present during the lowering of the body. Grass was planted on the grave to make it look like nothing had ever happened there. The next day, all his clothes and belongings were donated. The public has the right to know. The media's duty is to report. One of the horrible cases that is silenced in this long war is the case of the death of Dr. Adnan al-Bursh. Al Bursh is one of the best and most respected surgeons in Gaza. From the beginning of the war, he worked in several hospitals in an attempt to save as many civilians as possible who were injured by IDF shelling. He was arrested along with other medical teams and taken to detention in Sde Teyman, and then to the Ofer prison, where he was severely tortured until he died. Until the day of his death, no charges were filed against him, and he was not brought before a judge. His body is still being held in Israel, and no explanation has been given for his death. This is another shocking example of Israel's brutal repression policy.
