#phillyplanecrash I have a question. Based on tower audio the plane is instructed to takeoff from runway 240 then turn right to a heading of 290. So why did the plane apparently takeoff from runway 060 instead??

Apparently there was a fire on board in the cabin, and an oxygen tank exploded, killing all 6 instantly, then the plane was flying itself without a pilot and crashed on Cottman Ave. 50 more feet and 2-3 city blocks would have been fully engulfed and possibly still on fire today.

Flight Radar 24 and other apps like it use ADS-B data that is broadcast by the airplane itself. My understanding is that below that altitude either the plane stopped broadcasting or the ADS-B receivers stopped receiving it. FR24 posted more granular data for this flight earlier today

Runway 060 is opposite for 240, same runway just depends on direction you are flying. 240 would be going SW, and 060 going NE. He took off on 240 heading SW

V1 is the decision speed—the last speed at which a rejected takeoff is guaranteed to stop within the available runway. Above V1, the takeoff must be continued unless the aircraft is clearly unable to fly. But I read somewhere that when calculating takeoff performance (for any eventuality on the takeoff roll, like engine failure), instead of continuing the takeoff, the pilot flying would wait 2 seconds after reaching V1, then decide to reject the takeoff and safely come to a stop on the available runway distance. Could the LATAM B777-300ER pilots have used this same principle at Guarulhos? 📹: Aviação Guarulhos JPD (YouTube)

A Frontier Airlines flight bound for LAX hit a person on the runway during takeoff from Denver International Airport on Friday. The Airbus A321 was taking off from runway 17L when it appeared to strike an individual walking on the runway. The pilot quickly aborted the takeoff. Passengers were evacuated on the runway and are being bused back to the terminal. Fire crews were dispatched to the aircraft to extinguish the engine fire. Briefing from Dan Baker, the NTSB investigator in charge, on yesterday's plane crash that took the life of Greg Biffle, his family, and three others. The airplane took off at approx. 10:05 AM ET from runway 28 at Statesville Regional Airport, about 10 minutes prior to the accident. The plane made an initial left turn west before making another left turn east towards the airport approx. five minutes after takeoff. The plane then flew a left base turn to runway 28. The initial point of impact was a runway light stanchion located ~1800 ft from the runway threshold. The plane then impacted trees, two other light stanchions, and the airport perimeter fence short of the runway threshold before coming to rest near the runway threshold. All four corners of the airplane was well as flight control surfaces have been identified in the wreckage/debris field, and both engines were present with the main wreckage. The majority of the fuselage and inboard wing sections were consumed by the post-impact fire. Visual meteorological conditions included drizzle and broken ceilings. The wind was calm with five statute miles visibility.

The key point is that once a serious engine problem is identified, the crew has to make a rapid decision based on speed, runway remaining and aircraft performance. An A320 operating flight LA8019 to Mendoza was cleared for takeoff from runway 10L, but the controller immediately canceled the clearance after two aircraft crossed the runway—an instruction the pilot acknowledged. Moments later, the aircraft began accelerating, prompting the controller to urgently repeat: “8019, cancel takeoff clearance! I repeat, cancel takeoff clearance!” After aborting, the controller questioned why the pilot had started rolling despite the earlier acknowledged cancellation. The takeoff was aborted and the aircraft came to a stop past the runway with a collapsed right-hand main gear. The inner tire of the left-hand main gear was also shredded. DRC's Bureau for Aviation Accident and Incident Investigations says they will be investigating the incident.
