It happened again! Here's Phobos passing in front of the Sun as seen from the surface of Mars by the Perseverance rover on Aug. 12.

Mars' largest moon Phobos is slowly spiraling inward and could break apart to form a ring or collide with Mars in about 50 million years.

Solar Eclipse on Mars ☀️ This video captures impressive footage of Phobos—Mars’s potato-shaped moon—crossing the face of the Sun. The eclipse was recorded on April 2, 2022, by the Mastcam-Z camera aboard the Perseverance rover. Unlike solar eclipses caused by Earth's Moon, which last about an hour, Phobos transits the solar disk in roughly 40 seconds. The video shows its passage in real time. Phobos measures only about 20 km across—far smaller than the Moon’s diameter (3,475 km)—yet its proximity to Mars allows it to cover nearly half of the Sun's disk. Mars never experiences total solar eclipses like those seen on Earth. 🪐

Germany's DLR just released a sim of the Phobos lander that just launched and it tumbling around in super-slo-mo 1/1000th gravity is the funniest thing ever

Japan is heading to Mars moon Phobos, and honestly, part of me is excited while the other part has seen way too many sci-fi movies to feel completely comfortable 😭🚀

🚨👽THERE IS A 270-FOOT MONOLITH STANDING ON A MOON OF MARS AND NASA PROPOSED A MISSION TO GO SAMPLE IT. "NASA proposed a mission in 2007 to send a probe to this monolith on Phobos, take a sample of it, and do some direct analysis." "It's estimated to be 85 meters in diameter and 90 meters tall. It's like 270 feet roughly — like a tall building in size." "I've examined those NASA images of that monolith, and clearly there is no other structure anywhere else on Phobos nearly as large." "Certainly the monolith is geologically anomalous. It doesn't seem to be a natural formation of Phobos." "It's too large. It's too symmetrical. Its albedo, or reflectivity, is significantly different from the surface of Phobos." "It's very plausible that our solar system has been visited by ET visitors in the past." "Three billion years ago, Mars was much more Earth-like. You had a biosphere, you had a magnetosphere, and you had water." "If they wanted to monitor that life, maybe they would put something on Phobos, like a monolith, to monitor it."

A Martian Eclipse What's that passing in front of the Sun? It looks like a moon, but it can't be Earth's Moon, because it isn't round. It's the Martian moon Phobos. The featured video was taken from the surface of Mars in 2022 by the Perseverance rover. Phobos, at 11.5 kilometers across, is 150 times smaller than Luna (our moon) in diameter, but also 50 times closer to its parent planet. In fact, Phobos is so close to Mars that it is expected to break up and crash into Mars within the next 50 million years. In the near term, the low orbit of Phobos results in more rapid solar eclipses than seen from Earth. The featured video is shown in real time -- the transit really took about 40 seconds, as shown. The videographer -- the robotic rover Perseverance (Percy) -- continues to explore Jezero Crater on Mars, searching not only for clues to the watery history of the now dry world, but evidence of ancient microbial life. Video Credit: NASA, JPL-Caltech, ASU MSSS, SSI

Here's a look at the successful launch of the MMX spacecraft, heading towards the Mars moon Phobos to collect samples for retrieval. 🌕🚀 Should the spacecraft reach Phobos by its scheduled arrival time in early 2029, a special message and image of Sonic created by Kazuyuki Hoshino will be transmitted to Earth, in collaboration with JAXA and NASA's joint MMX initiative. #SonicNews

One week until the launch window opens for JAXA(Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)'s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission. Our Pneumatic Sampler, or P-Sampler, will soon be heading to Phobos aboard the MMX spacecraft. Designed to use high-pressure nitrogen gas to collect Phobos regolith, it will support the study of Mars’ moons and their origins. Learn more about P-Sampler:
