Iโ€™ll give you one better. Put your phone on the table and then when the other person begins to talk, interrupt them briefly and say, โ€œIโ€™m sorry, hold on a minute. I want to turn my phone off so Iโ€™m not disturbed while weโ€™re having lunch together.โ€ Do you know what always happens? The person youโ€™re having lunch with does the exact same thing. Now you have a lunch with two phones that are turned off.

My husbandโ€™s said it best, โ€œ The greatest gift you can give someone is your attention.โ€

Keeping the phone close allows us to be engaged while still feeling that we are connected with what's most important to us. I'm happy to go on a team lunch with my colleagues, but if my family wants to reach me, that's my top priority.

I donโ€™t agree, fair points, but itโ€™s up to the individual to manage this. This is far too prescriptive - one size doesnโ€™t fit all.
