This is extremely concerning and I don’t care what anyone has to say about distance from the lidar sensors. We should not be allowing laser systems, powerful enough to damage camera sensors. Where is the concrete evidence that this can’t hurt our vision as well

Clearly Apple teamed up with LiDAR to strategically damage camera sensors right before the iPhone 17 launch 😉

Lidar permanently damages your smartphone camera FSD only causes temporary loss of hair (shaving of head) Pick your battle @MKBHD

I feel like lasers powerful enough to kill a camera sensor can’t be good for our eyes. Imagine 20 years from now when every car in oncoming traffic is blasting our eyes with lidar. No bueno.

Self driving cars 🤣🤣🤣 You mean other than Tesla Lidar lol.

Another reason to go vision only for self driving, with enough LIDAR arrays around every city traffic shot is going to destroy your phone.

Not all self driving cars have lidar (Tesla)

In the US you sue a company for an overcooked french fries but you can't stop a company making cars with lidar cannons that literally destroy your camera sensors?

Get a Tesla, save your phone camera. Also it's better.

All of us checking our cameras. 😂

FYI. Not all LiDAR systems cause this issue. However, LiDAR operating at 1550 nm appears to be capable of damaging cameras. Volvo, for example, uses Luminar’s LiDAR, and there have already been reported incidents.

“Eyes experience laser exposure additively, not through sensor-like interference. Multiple beams could theoretically sum if they overlap spatially and temporally on the retina, but this is improbable” — grok Eyes might be fine but camera sensors won’t be safe. Imaging crossing a busy traffic intersection with lots of cars at the intersection, all of them shooting lasers all around and you accidentally open the camera app. cleantechnica . com /2021/03/12/lidar-may-be-harmful-to-people-cameras/

I can't believe how chill you are about this issue. This feels like a major hurdle to scale any autonomous driving relying on LiDAR. You can't have hordes of LiDAR damaging peoples property.

Smart phones don't HAVE to be thin, but apparently enough customers prefer it so phone makers sell them that way I really wish a phone company would say least TRY a phone that had a one week battery life but was ½-¾ inch thick... Bonus: more room for camera hardware!

I have an idea @MKBHD The solution is to get a new iPhone 16 and give away this one to me. This way you are solving 2 problems: 1, you don't have to worry about the damage on every of your photos/videos. 2, I get to finally upgrade from iPhone x to 16. 😊😊 What do you think?
