The brain and neural activity is a physical mechanism, a biological processor. It needs a programmer, and that is the non-physical mind. It needs an operator, and that is the non-physical emotional heart that provides motive. Physical processes cannot explain motive.

We did not created anything. We only found what was always there. Math is not created or invented. We can only interpret or use it with our limited understanding and capacity.

This completely parallels the conclusions I came to while in Jr High. I called it the Oversoul rather than consciousness, but the aspects are identical. I believed evolution was the Oversoul slowly and incrementally nudging life to become a better tool. Who knew?
