You manage a railroad company, buy trains, set schedules, connect towns, build infrastructure, and watch your railway network (and empire) grow. The attention to historical detail only later caught my eye. The steam engine trains of the early era, the electrical trains that came later, the wonderful pixel-style graphics, and the game's pace all blended into a beautiful game. Last but not least, the era-typical massive manual with a crapload of information and historical data. The end of fiscal year rating was pretty funny, with the different "titles" that were bestowed on you - from Hobo to President of the United States - depending on how well you performed. MicroProse was a real powerhouse in the 80s and 90s, and Railroad Tycoon was one of the many reasons why.

Rise of Nations (Big Huge Games, 2003) was another one of those great RTS games that - maybe - got a little lost in the shuffle of the juggernauts of that era. It was designed by Brian Reynolds, who was formerly with MicroProse and Firaxis, creating Civilization II and Alpha Centauri. Rise of Nations featured over 100 unique units, a huge selection of buildings and wonders (that greatly affected your nation), excellent graphics (zoom in/out), and a campaign mode and multiplayer option, received extremely positive reviews (often in the high 90s range) and was a commercial success. If you were a fan of Age of Empires, Empire Earth and other RTS games of that kind, Rise of Nations was probably also very high on your list. I remember many, many epic LAN weekends in 3v3 matches... good times!

Ecstatica is one of the first 3D survival horror games, and it was pretty advanced for its time. You can play as either a man or a woman, and it features great graphics, atmosphere, and cool mechanics, like the werewolf (not an ape!) stalking you through the town. It's very brutal and has a twisted sense of humor. Really good game.

If you had an NES in the 80s, you played this! Punch Out (Nintendo, 1987) is one of only 2 NES games that sold over 2 million units by 1988 - the other one being The Legend of Zelda - making it one of Nintendo's best selling games of all time. You're taking on the role of Little Mac, a 17-year-old boxer trying his luck against opponents like Glass Joe, Bald Bull, and King Hippo, plus - of course - the legendary Mike Tyson in the final fight. One criticism I always see towards games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI recently is the topic of small details. "Why does a game need so many details, it doesn't make the experience any better and takes longer to develop" While I do agree with the fact that Rockstar Games development schedules in between each release keep getting longer, the fact is that when you aim for such a high level of realism in a video-game, its not about graphics anymore, its about immersion. I'm sure that if you played RDR2, you know that your horse sweating or its balls shrinking in the cold don't add much to the gameplay itself, but it makes the game feel like its real. This is precisely what sets apart Rockstar Games from other game studios, the level of immersion you get in those games is unbeaten. RDR2, a game designed for the PS4 console has a level of fluidity and immersion that I have yet to see in a video-game from any other game studio, each game mechanic seems to work flawlessly that it feels like a living and breathing open world game. Hell, sometimes you feel bad for shooting an NPC which never happened to me in a video-game before. When you're playing it, hours can go by and you don't even. In other open-world games, sometimes you can notice limitations, for example the same NPCs appearing in one object or the same scripted conversations. RDR2 manages to make that gap of a video-game and reality feel thinner, not get rid of it entirely of course. Making such a massive game filled with tons of details means that it can be can be played for multiple years after its release and not feel outdated. Its not all about details of course, when a game takes so long to develop, the stakes get higher each time and Rockstar Games has to make sure that they deliver on the story that is being told too, hence the reason why their games have always been historically good in terms of writing. Now to address the elephant int he room, the main issue is that as the complexity increases for each new release and optimizing all of these systems to work in tandem, the development time increases and we get longer periods of waiting. Is all of this worth it? In my opinion, yes. Its Rockstar Games after all, they have the budget necessary and the talent to achieve this kind of feat. Not only does it raise the bar for what is possible to do in a video-game, but it also is highly rewarding when you play the game for the first time and its unlike anything you've seen these past couple of years. When I finished playing Red Dead Redemption 2 for the first time, every new game that came out felt outdated for me. Just as technology keeps going forward, the same applies here with open world games too. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Some games from the 80s are hardwired into my brain. I hear two seconds of their soundtrack and I’m right there again. I see a screenshot and it instantly teleports me back. One of those is The Last Ninja, developed by System 3 and published in 1987. I was simply blown away by the graphics (isometric on the C64 with such an amazing level of detail - simply gorgeous) and mesmerized by the kickass sound. What Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees conjured up musically will forever be part of gaming history - an absolute iconic masterpiece. The game itself was pretty straightforward: a mix of action-adventure and a bit of puzzle-solving, nothing groundbreaking. But that didn’t matter, because very few games made you feel so immersed the way The Last Ninja did. Though a single-player game, it was often our choice when my friends and I met up after school to play, taking turns and seeing how far we could get together as a team. When you weren’t playing, you could just watch (and listen!), and it was an absolute joy. Which 80s game had a similar effect on you? One that totally blew you away.

Definitely not a game for the casual gamer but a feast for fans of air combat sims with a strong historical background. Lucasfilm was renamed LucasArts and later went into space combat sims (X-Wing, Tie Fighter) but sadly never published another historical simulation. A missed opportinity given the huge success of Their Finest Hour and Secrets Weapons of the Luftwaffe.

Not many games had a better '80s vibe than California Games (Epyx, 1987). The disciplines were half-pipe, footbag, surfing, roller skating, BMX, and flying disc - quite the mix. Getting bonus points for hitting the seagull with the hacky sack, faceplanting over a crack in the sidewalk along the beach, or unsuccessfully diving for an overthrown frisbee; California Games was just a blast. Apart from being fun, it became Epyx's best-selling game, reaching half a million units by 1989. I remember it being a popular choice when my friends and I played (others being M.U.L.E. and Decathlon). I'm pretty sure that anyone who ever had a C64 also played California Games at some point. As brilliant as it was, its sequel was abysmal.

Panzer General's structure was much simpler compared to SSI's traditional deep, simulation-heavy titles like those from Gary Grigsby (such as Panzer Strike, Battlegroup or Typhoon of Steel), but this move opened up their games to a more mainstream audience - and ultimately making Panzer General a commercial success. Sequels such as Fantasy General (1996) or Allied General (1995) were based on the same engine. I always liked turn-based strategy games (Battle Isle, Master of Orion, Civilization), so Panzer General was one of the many classics of the 90s, arguably the peak decade for such games.

The Dig (LucasArts, 1995) didn't achieve the same impact or cult status as Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, or Indiana Jones, but I devoured it back in the day. In terms of immersion, it was one of LucasArts' best games ever and a milestone of 90s adventure games. It was highly praised by magazines but lost points for high difficulty, making it one of the era's toughest adventure games - and thus diverging from LucasArts' usual style which was usually on the easy/moderate level of difficulty. The visuals and music of The Dig remain incredible, even 30 years later. The large sprites, the amazing choice and composition of colours, the movie like vibe - I found this one to stand out and always wondered why unlike other advneture games this one never got a sequel.

Who here remembers Pharaoh (1999), a city-building sim developed by Impressions Games? Deciding between this one and Caesar III (also by Impressions Games) was tough. I lean ever so slightly toward Pharaoh, but it’s very close. Maybe it’s just the setting - ancient Egypt instead of yet another “build an empire in Europe” variant. Pharaoh felt a bit more exciting and fresh with its different cultural background. Players guide a dynasty across 15 centuries of ancient Egypt, starting with a small village and rising to massive cities. Core gameplay revolves around resource management, housing evolution, farming, trade, and constructing monumental wonders like pyramids. In this sense the connection to Caesar III is noticeable, as the key focus is on micro-management. Your people need food, goods, healthcare, and a few more things to stay happy. You also prepare to defend against invaders or the occasional disaster, which increase in the later stages of the game. It was highly praised for its historical depth and atmospheric soundtrack (sometimes just watching your people go about their day and listening to all the sounds was almost hypnotic). If you were a fan of “build an empire” games, Impressions was really one of the kings of the 90s.

Before FIFA (EA) took over and monopolized the market, there were quite a lot of football (soccer) games. Some that come to mind: Kick Off, Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, Goal, MicroProse Soccer... and then, of course, probably the most popular one: Sensible World of Soccer from 1994. One of the many things that made it so popular were its controls. You didn't have to be a pro to keep the ball close to you, you could focus much more on passing and shooting. What some of the higher skill ceiling players would probably point out as a weakness, turned out to be what made Sensible World of Soccer the most successful among the home computer world - no other game sold more copies. None. It's one of the games I still load up when old friends come to visit and we nerd out on the Amiga. Sensible World of Soccer has a timeless quality and even over three decades later it still holds up.

I often use the word "soul" when I compare old games to new ones - and this one is absolutely bursting at the seams with it Graphics: 10/10 Music: 10/10 Gameplay: 10/10 In 1990, The Secret of Monkey Island was light-years ahead of anything that had come before it. It didn't just look a little better - it completely moved the goalposts. Remember the first time you saw the intro? I thought I'd never see a better game. I will always associate Bullfrog Productions with innovation, daring to take risks, and trying unconventional ideas. That approach didn't just evolve later in their timeline of games but was pretty evident early on. Populous (1989) is widely recognized as the origin of God games. I remember having zero idea what to do when first playing it but being instantly hooked. Over time I figured it out, what the goal of the game was, how the mana bar worked, what effect the disasters had, how to raise or flatten land - I mean, think about how many other games before allowed you to cast an earthquake spell on your enemy, or to terraform the land around you, letting your hero cross the seas to wreak havoc on enemy peasants. Pure glorious mayham, fun, and a very novel concept. Obviously, the graphics look a bit dated now (though I love that pixel style), however the concept itself feels timeless. Populous is the game that first comes to mind when I see the Bullfrog logo, but it was not their only unique and ground-breaking game. One of the best developers of the 80s and 90s, truly missed if you ask me.

I remember having zero idea what to do when first playing it but being instantly hooked. Over time I figured it out, what the goal of the game was, how the mana bar worked, what effect the disasters had, how to raise or flatten land - I mean, think about how many other games before allowed you to cast an earthquake spell on your enemy, or to terraform the land around you, letting your hero cross the seas to wreak havoc on enemy peasants. Pure glorious mayham, fun, and a very novel concept. Obviously, the graphics look a bit dated now (though I love that pixel style), however the concept itself feels timeless. Populous is the game that first comes to mind when I see the Bullfrog logo, but it was not their only unique and ground-breaking game. One of the best developers of the 80s and 90s, truly missed if you ask me.

Any fans of this masterpiece? One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

An oldie but goldie: Marble Madness from 1984 was designed by Mark Cerny at just 17 years old (turning 18 during development), marking his breakthrough after winning an Atari contest. He later became lead architect for PlayStation 4 and 5. Quite a career path, isn't it? Not sure what you were doing at 17, but I certainly did not have the skill or patience to design games. How someone can create such an awesome game at such a young age is mind-blowing to me. One of the most fun and unique games I ever played. The music is instantly recognizable and adds an almost surreal "spacey" vibe to it. Early to mid 80s era was full of unique gems that are still talked about today, and Marble Madness certainly deserves to be on that list.

How do you take one of humanity's oldest games - a game long stigmatized as difficult to learn, even harder to master, and mostly played by introverted nerds - and turn it into a fun, hugely successful computer game for the masses? Enter Battle Chess. Yes, you still had to know (or learn) the rules to actually play. But let's be honest: it's far more enjoyable to learn while playing - and even losing - when you watch your queen dramatically devoured by an enemy rook, or your king comically flattened under its fist. Each encounter had its own animation, beautifully done. Obviously, there's no hard data on how many kids and teens in the 80s and early 90s first got hooked on chess thanks to this wonderful game. But I know I was one of them. Battle Chess sparked my interest, led me to join a chess club in 1989, play in a few tournaments (I never won), and still enjoy the game today. I'd like to believe I wasn't the only one. I often feel that pre-2000 games had a bigger positive impact on us than many modern (mobile) games do on kids today. I'm not claiming all current games are worthless - far from it - but I'll stand firm on this hill: older titles sometimes delivered real educational value without players ever feeling like they were being "taught" something. Battle Chess was exactly that kind of game.
