I hacked this game to death. Cheatmachine contained some save file documentation, but it was quite easy to reverse engineer too because a save was a complete directory with files per organizational unit. For example, a single base was a single file in that dir. By making small adjustments in game and then comparing the differences in the files, one could easily make out what all the data meant. I made a graphical editor in QBasic that allowed me to edit bases and their stock inventories, the personel roster, etc. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I did a full honest playthrough 😂.

It's astonishing how this game hit the mark on so many levels: gameplay, visuals, atmosphere, immersion. Arguably not improved (or at least not significantly) by any of the UFO / X-COM games that followed.

Was playing this yesterday on an Amiga mini. Still a beautifully written game.

And again I have personal stories. I told about fur coats made of Mutons, I told about the pirate novelization. Now I will tell about the game as I saw for the first time. As always, the game came to me and my friend as is. No box, no manual, no installer.

Favorite game + Terror from Deep ☺ difficult yes, but very enjoyable
