It was never a spell, only a prophecy. At the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Merry’s stroke proved decisive. His blade was one of the ancient weapons of Westernesse, forged during the wars against Angmar and enchanted against the Witch-king. When Merry struck, the blade shattered the sorcery that bound the Nazgûl’s form together. With that power broken, Éowyn was able to deliver the fatal blow, fulfilling the prophecy as it had long been foretold, that the Witch-king would fall at the hands of one who was no man.

According to the Return of the King book, Gandalf and the Witch-king meet at the gate of Minas Tirith and exchange a brief challenge, but they never actually fight. In particular, the scene where the Witch-king breaks Gandalf’s staff is entirely a film invention. The Witch-king neither possesses that kind of power nor the authority to do such a thing in Tolkien’s books. However, it is worth remembering that during the Siege of Gondor, the Witch-king had been specially empowered by Sauron. This is likely one of the main reasons he was bold enough to challenge Gandalf in the first place.

The original design for the Witch-king of Angmar was very different and, in Jackson’s opinion, too similar to how Sauron appeared in the first film. To avoid confusion, his appearance was altered to make him more Nazgul-like, and mace was also made much larger.
