Playing pups spotted 👀 This very recent video features six wolf pups from the One Ear Pack in Jackson County. These pups are in addition to the three wolf pups from the King Mountain Pack that were recently seen in a trail camera video.

First look at the Pelican River Pack pups a few weeks ago (footage from July 11). Six of the pack's 7 pups were still alive, which is pretty good, but the really difficult part of summer—mid-August to September—when most pups die is still ahead. Will be interesting to see what happens. In the shot of the entire pack, the collared wolf to the right is the father of the pups (Wolf W9C) and the adult wolf on the left is the mother. Getting observations of the parents and all their pups together in early July is not common for us so was exciting to capture to see (and it is great data too!).

The Mithrandir Pack captured on camera 21 hours ago at 10 a.m. yesterday morning. We visited the camera and swapped the SD card just a few hours later...only a few hours behind the pack! Mithrandir, as you can see in this video, is comprised of the breeding male and female, and their 3 living pups. The Mithrandir Pack had 5 pups this spring (we tagged all 5 pups), meaning they have had a pretty high pup survival rate thus far. For perspective, the typical pack in our area raises ~1.3-1.4 pups to adulthood on average. One interesting thing to notice is the difference in body size of the pups. Specifically, one pup is much smaller than the others. We suspect this is because that pup is a female and the others are males (females are generally a fair bit smaller than males in our area). Either way, pretty neat to think we were only a few hours behind the pack.

Six Red Wolf Pups Born at Zoo Knoxville! On Earth Day, our Red Wolf pair, Buckeye (9) and Cirilla (3), welcomed six critically endangered pups into the world. These new arrivals are part of the SAFE American Red Wolf program—a collaborative effort to save the most endangered wolf species on the planet. Zoo Knoxville is proud to be part of this essential conservation work. With fewer than 20 Red Wolves in the wild and under 300 in human care, every pup counts. We’re giving the new family plenty of space, but early signs are good—Cirilla is proving to be a great mom, and the pups are growing strong. 🐾

Still probably our luckiest trail cam video ever: the Paradise Pack parents chasing a black bear away from their pups at the den. Not only did we get this on camera but we got it from 3 diff. angles! Something you would never see in our area without trail cams!

What happens when two wolves find a badger in the woods…some trail camera gold!! Moral of the story: you just don’t mess around with badgers! For a bit of context, the pair of wolves here are the Blood Moon Pack (the pack was only 2 wolves last winter). The breeding female of the Blood Moon Pack, Wolf Y5E, was killed by the Biondich Pack in late January 2025. This left the breeding male, Wolf Y1T, by himself as the Blood Moon Pack was just a breeding pair. However, Y1T found a new mate by early March or so. The first wolf in the video is his new mate who he had been traveling with for the past 1.5 months (this video was taken in mid-April 2025). The Blood Moon Pack did not produce pups in 2025 because the mating season had passed by the time Y1T found his new mate. So, the Biondich Pack effectively prevented their neighbor, the Blood Moon Pack, from reproducing. Anyway, the second wolf in the video is Wolf Y1T who walks up to give the badger a little sniff!

Wolf pups start developing personalities from a young age, which, in part, helps pups to quickly form a hierarchy of sorts amongst their littermates. This small pup, with a bold and perhaps reckless streak, was letting us know who the boss was even though it was just a month old (volume up)! Typically, when we go in to count pups at dens, all the pups scurry into the den and remain together there as far back in the den as they can get. This is the only instance we can recall of a pup walking out to the edge of the den to stand there and growl at us. In other words, this behavior is uncommon. Why is this behavior rare? We suspect it is because pups that come out of the den to 'fend off' predators or danger probably would be killed pretty readily if predators visited the den. The purpose of the den is to provide protection/shelter should danger approach. We do not know what this pup's fate was. We think that 2 or 3 pups from this litter of 4 survived so good decent change he was one of the pups who made it but we won’t ever really know.

The pups of the Cranberry Bay Pack in a remote area of Voyageurs National Park. The den included a large area at the base of a large balsam fir that was surrounded on one side by really thick deadfall…which makes for a pretty impenetrable den. We tagged, weighed, and sexed all 6 of the pack's pups, and will use trail cameras for the remainder of the summer, fall, and winter to understand how many of these pups survive. The pups were active & ready to explore this morning! It’s getting harder for the adult otters to keep them contained inside of the nest box. Recently, keepers caught a glimpse of the adult otters introducing the pups to water! They are starting to develop their aquatic skills!
