Thank you for this. My son and I were extras in the film. My son has severe Tourette’s, and through that experience we met John and now consider him a friend. The past few days have been hard. I won’t lie, it’s shaken me. I worry about my son’s future. My guard had come down because the response to the film was overwhelmingly positive. So much understanding. So much compassion. And then the last few days happened. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly ignorance resurfaces. But it also reminds me why the film matters so much. Why the education matters. And why we keep going.

Exactly. It's such a sad irony. But hopefully more people will learn about tourettes and Please tell your son from me that there will always be good people who understand he can't help it and stay away from people who choose ignorance.

This is why I get self conscious and hate being in public, because dealing with tourettes is a monumental task. I've taken YEARS to try and control mine and I STILL fail. People just... Suck.

Well said and spot on. I do think when people actually make the effort to watch the film, they will have a different perspective on the incident. I'd recommend the film anyway as a film. It was brilliant and had so much heart.

I knew a kid in high school that killed himself because of his tourettes, he told me the things you dont want to say the most come out at the worst times. Its how it works, people just hate whitey these days and wanna be mad at everything.

I’ve not seen anyone saying that he apologised publicly. If he has done so publicly then great. If he’s only done so privately then he needs to do more. Having Tourette’s doesn’t change the impact of the word.

Tourettes is often made worse by stress and anxiety, like stuttering. And man, getting up on stage in front of a huge crowd to accept that award has gotta be stressful AF. Anyone vilifying the poor guy needs to take a long hard look at themselves. Like you said, take a day off.
