I heard Boots on the radio today on my way home from work. A little electric radio station outside Philly. After you there was a beautiful orchestration of Moonlight in Vermont. The set ended with your dad singing Young at Heart. Nice ride home!

Go behind the scenes of the making of the “This Town” segment from Movin’ With Nancy through archival audio with director Jack Haley, Jr. and me. “This Town” was filmed primarily at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power building and at Fort Point in San Francisco. My orange coat and pink accessories really popped against the muted colors of my surroundings. I still have the coat, but I wish I still had the cap. It’s so cute! Both my dad and I recorded “This Town.” I recorded it first it Movin’ With Nancy, but when Dad heard my recording, he loved it so much that he decided to record it himself. Movin’ With Nancy is one of the most ambitious creative projects in Nancy Sinatra’s career. The hour long, 1967 television special and accompanying soundtrack album capture the creative, groovy, and beautiful times of the 1960s. The project was funded by RC Cola, but this was no cash in. It was a passion project for Nancy, who asked her dad, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and other family and friends to be in the movie. She also used her own cars, clothes, house and did her own make-up. A truly DIY production. On billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 chart dated February 26, 1966, “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” became my first #1 hit. Over the years the song has taken on a life of its own. It’s like being associated with a brand. EVERYBODY knows “Boots!” Even now people send me videos of their small children singing and dancing to it. If I have any complaints, it’s that history has rewritten me as a one-hit-wonder. That I hate. “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” was part of my stage show, The Nancy Sinatra Show, and was featured in the filmed version, Movin’ With Nancy On Stage in 1971. This clip hasn’t been seen in over 50 years.

From fighting to stay with a label that had no interest in me as an artist, to recording an ultimately shelved album with Lee Hazlewood, to his sudden and unannounced departure for Sweden, my last few years on Reprise Records were turbulent, to say the least. After Lee removed himself from my life, I was left to pick up the pieces and forge ahead with my buddy, Billy Strange. Together, we created Nancy, my final album released by Reprise. Producer Hunter Lea has put together a short film about this time in my career, entitled The Story of Nancy, which will premiere on my YouTube Channel on Sunday, November 30th at 5pm PST/8pm EST. “More Than a Woman” was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Recorded by the Bee Gees in 1977, the song became one of the soundtrack's most memorable romantic tracks. Unusually, the soundtrack contains two official versions of the song: the Bee Gees' own recording and a cover by Tavares, with both versions also appearing in the film. It was the Tavares version that became the commercial hit, reaching No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart. “Sugar Town” isn’t one of my favorites of my records, but it hit the top 5 and became one of my biggest hits. Putting together an album around it proved to be quite the challenge. “Sugar Town” was basically LSD, but wasn’t publicized as such. It was Lee’s “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.” The song went against my image, which made it tough to choose songs for the same collection. In the end we decided to go with Dixieland Jazz standards standards and called the album Sugar. My friend, Ron Joy, shot the cover photo. I thought wearing a bikini by the beach was kind of commonplace, but a bikini in ugly weeds, a little kookie. I wanted something that was different because I knew the idea of a bikini on an album cover would be shocking in the first place. A screen was placed over the photo because it was way too graphic for the day. It was pretty much the first of its kind and the label was afraid of it. The bikini is tame by today’s standards, but when the album came out it was quite provocative. In fact, it was banned in Boston! A newly remastered Sugar joins Light in the Attic’s Nancy Sinatra Archival Series on November 29. Preorder CD and vinyl: 👉

Billy Strange and Mac Davis wrote it for Elvis’ 1968 television special, during the time Mac was signed to our company B-n-B Music (Boots-n-Billy). The guys were asked to write a song about looking back and the song came together in just one night. I recorded “Memories” for my album Nancy.
