explains where things stand as of yesterday in this video. Letter: This is happening with zero local input. The gov seized control of the airstrip’s land because of a “state of emergency” he declared in January 2023 and extended for 2.5 yrs.

This map gives you an idea of how secluded the site for the Everglades concentration camp would be. 55 miles from Miami in Big Cypress National Preserve. Cruel and barbaric for the people who will be sent there and another destructive development harming the Everglades.

Betty Osceola, Miccosukee elder and activist, called for a last-minute protest this past Sunday at the “Alligator Alcatraz” site. Hundreds of people from across South FL showed up to demand no prisons on native land, no more development in the Everglades. An incredible turnout.

In the 60s, the Miccosukee Tribe and environmental activists fought hard against the development of the Everglades airstrip, which was supposed to be the largest airport in the world. They won. Today, “Alligator Alcatraz” could become another flashpoint.

This is a continuation of longtime local Indigenous-led action against development in the Everglades. As the fascist state seems eager to get this cruel site up and running as fast as possible, the fight is just beginning.

More details: - They want to put people in tents at the site as early as NEXT WEEK - There is NO INFRASTRUCTURE for keeping people there much less THOUSANDS. It’s a basic airstrip. You can assume the conditions will be horrifying. Krome is already very bad

- The people sent here will be vulnerable to the elements, hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, flooding, heat, and regular thunderstorms - This could contaminate the water supply for millions of people as 40% of the drinking water comes from the preserve

- They want to use FEMA funds to put our neighbors in a concentration camp instead of giving that money to hurricane victims - It’s going to cost $450 million per year Everything about this is cruel

Update: next protest this Saturday

The State of Florida is lying to us. Alligator Alcatraz isn't for the worst of the worst. They're sending immigrants w/out criminal charges there + refusing to allow state legislative oversight of a state-run detention camp with $450 MILLION of our money! What are they hiding?
