The World Cup starts tonight! ⚽️ But by the end of the first match, we’ll be one man down. Someone dies by suicide in our country every 90 minutes. Three-quarters of these are men. I spoke with Luke the co-founder of #ANDYSMANCLUB about male suicide, mental health and the help that is out there. 👇 Andy's Man Club is an incredible organisation that helps men across Britain open up, talk about what is going on in their lives, and help one another. I have been to sessions in my constituency and was overwhelmed by the support they can offer men dealing with all sorts of problems in their lives - small or large. In each session, a football is passed around the group to share thoughts, challenges, and successes. Simple, but effective and liberating! As a government, we take mental heath - and men's mental health - seriously. We published England’s first Men's Health Strategy last year, which committed further funding for suicide prevention programmes, recognising that suicide is one of the biggest killer of men under 50. We are investing £3.6 million in community based suicide prevention projects - and supporting the Premier League Together Against Suicide initiative with Samaritans. And this is a challenge for all of us, not just government. As a society we can do more to encourage men to open up, get the weight off their shoulders. That is a key part of our Men and Boys work led by David Lammy - amplifying the issues, assuring folk there is help out there. Enjoy the football, look out for one another, and know there is support out there!

September is World Suicide Prevention Month, and today is especially poignant for me. It's my uncle Mark's birthday; someone I lost far too soon to suicide back in 1993 when I was just 8 years old. He never made it to 30. His absence still leaves a hole in my heart.

Very touching video between the Prince of Wales and Rhian Mannings to discuss the suicide of her husband to mark #WorldMentalHealthDay. Supporting and speaking up on Mental Health has been a decade long cause for the Prince and Princess of Wales. but for Prince William suicide prevention especially in Males has been a key topic. Watching William being so affected while discussing “suicide” reminds me of his 2017 GQ interview in which he revealed why Mental Health became an important cause for him: “If I think about my current job as a helicopter pilot with the air ambulance service in East Anglia, my first job there was a suicide and it really affected me. I have been to a number of suicides, self harms, overdoses.”💔 When asked why did that affect him so much, Prince William replied: “Not just the person who lost their life, but the people they leave behind. One of the stats I was given was that, just in the area we cover in the east of England - my base is in Cambridge - there are five attempted suicides every day. Yet suicide is still not talked about. So people have the pain of loss, but also the stigma and taboo means they are sometimes ashamed even to talk about how a lover, a partner, a brother, a sister, a best friend, how they died. That stat - five attempted suicides in the East Anglia region alone - it blew my mind, I thought, "Oh my God, this is such a big issue."🥹❤️‍🩹 This is the background story that lead us to this emotional video. Losing a loved one to natural death is already quite emotional and heartbreaking. Losing a loved one to Suicide is distressing and mentally traumatising❤️‍🩹 It is a hard topic but a necessary one and it is good to see the Future King be the one to lead the way every time there is a hard topic to discuss or champion such as suicide or homelessness. After learning of the heartbreaking cause of death for Ricky Hatton today I think it’s vitally important that we again come together & keep talking & raising awareness around #mentalhealth Over 80 men a week in the U.K die by suicide - that’s over 12 a day It’s the single biggest killer of men in the UK under 50 Plz never tell someone to man up Lads if you’re struggling remember: It does NOT make you less of a man You deserve to be here You are loved We care ❤️ Suicide is not selfish. Suicide is, normally, death caused by the illness of depression. It is the final symptom. A final collapse under unbearable weight. Suicide is a tragedy. And yet, why is male suicide never discussed among MRAs unless a woman is to blame? We must find solutions, TOGETHER. Feminists are proposing solutions, join us! Work with us! Help us! We are NOT the enemy.
