James 1:2-4 Testing of Your Faith [2] Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, [3] for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. [4] And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

I don't think it is productive to dwell too much into other people's religious expression. It's very subjective.

Not fully with them on the trauma is a blessing part but what they saying is true. You do need to go through things to learn stuff in life. Most of the most compassionate and kind people. Went through some of the shittiest situations and they know how that feels. So they do everything they power not to put somebody through that situation. Or help prevent somebody from going through a bad situation or something that could be harmful to them.

I think it translates to "for starting at $1200 I can get a round-trip first class ticket out of the western world."

Trauma, is a gift? Wow, these two sound like they are comparing a Karen cutting them off at the Starbuck's line with trauma. No, trauma is never a gift, it is tragedy, it never builds you up, it leaves you lesser like all experiences with evil. You don't rise up from it wiser, better, more moral on your own strength. You rise again because Hashem as he breathed a breath of life into Adam and all at birth still needs you, it is the divine which allows us to endure and go on. All true moral strength against the uncountable and forever wounding tragedies of life can only come from a force so much greater.
