West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that her Government will allow diversion of 30% of Tea Garden land for purposes other than for producing tea. This is an extremely dangerous proposition as it would threaten protection of traditional land rights of the Gorkhas, Adivasis, Rajbangshis, Rabha, Koche, Meche, Toto, Bengali and other communities who are the indigenous people of our Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars. As the WB Govt is planning to hand over tea garden land to their donor friends in the name of "Tea Tourism", to open up the tea garden lands for Commercial Real-estate Development and other purposes, this 30% land diversion is permitted, it will mean the end of the tea industry, as real-estates will take over, and tea garden workers and later the cinchona garden workers would be deprived of rights to their ancestral lands. To protest against the WB Govt's dictatorship and prevent the deprivation of Tea Workers, I addressed a Rally at Kalchini organised by the BJP West Bengal Alipurduar Organizational District.

The Tea garden communities- Assam's economic backbone, producing over 50% of India's tea – lived in labour lines as outsiders for centuries and successive Cong Govts, over decades ignored their aspirations. Today, under Adarniya Narendra Modi ji's leadership, our Double Engine Sarkar has ensured that they become rightful owners of their lands. My tea garden families can now access loans, build homes, farm side-by-side and educate their children with the host of support schemes we have implemented for the community.
