COUNTERFEIT GOODS WORTH MORE THAN R160 MILLION SEIZED, MANUFACTURING PLANT SHUT DOWN DURING RECENT NATIONWIDE OPERATIONS The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with its crime-fighting partners, continues to record commendable progress in dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal trade in counterfeit and illicit goods. This week, police collectively seized counterfeit goods worth more than R160 million during multiple takedown operations in different parts of the country. The National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit led a joint takedown operation in Bellville on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, which resulted in the seizure of counterfeit goods worth more than R117 million. The multidisciplinary team also comprised members from the Western Cape Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, Crime Intelligence, the National Intervention Unit (NIU), Public Order Policing (POP), officials from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Division, and brand protectors. The team seized over 130 000 counterfeit items, including branded clothing, sports apparel, sneakers, caps, sunglasses, and watches. In Gauteng, police executed several takedown operations in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Meyerton, Vanderbijlpark, and Vereeniging throughout the week. In one operation, the Gauteng Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, with support from various role players, shut down a counterfeit manufacturing plant operating in a medical building in the Johannesburg CBD. Counterfeit goods and label-printing machines worth over R28 million were seized. Additionally, a takedown operation in KwaZulu-Natal resulted in the seizure of a large consignment of counterfeit cigarettes worth over R15 million in Sydenham. These operations form part of ongoing national efforts to address the illegal trade in counterfeit and illicit goods in the country. The illegal trade in counterfeit goods not only undermines the economy of South Africa, but also threatens consumer health and safety, infringes on intellectual property rights, and erodes legitimate businesses.

Massive drug syndicate dismantled in Standerton, SAPS seizes over R48 million in drugs and equipment A multi-agency police operation has successfully dismantled a major drug syndicate in Standerton, resulting in the arrest of nine suspects and the seizure of drugs, equipment, and luxury vehicles worth over R48 million. The operation, which began in April 2024 following a community tip-off, led to the discovery of two illicit drug manufacturing labs. Authorities raided the drug labs on April 4 and 8, 2025. One lab was located in an industrial warehouse, while the other was situated on a nearby farm. The clandestine facilities were equipped with sophisticated equipment used to manufacture illegal drugs. Authorities discovered large quantities of both liquid and powder chemicals, which are believed to be precursors for the production of methamphetamine and other narcotics. Among the seized items was a tablet pressing machine used to create finished drug products, including tablets and capsules. The operation also led to the confiscation of high-value assets, including several luxury vehicles. Notably, a Mercedes Benz was found containing R3.6 million in cash, suspected to be proceeds from drug trafficking. A white Isuzu van, also seized during the operation, is believed to have been used in transporting illicit drugs. Nine suspects were arrested, including five undocumented Mozambican nationals and three South African men. Eight remain in custody pending a bail hearing set for April 25, 2025, while one suspect was released. The bust is part of a broader national crackdown on drug trafficking, as the South African Police Service (SAPS) has destroyed over R5.2 billion worth of drugs in the past three years. This operation highlights South Africa’s ongoing struggle with international drug syndicates, which often operate across borders. The use of sophisticated drug labs, such as the ones uncovered in Standerton, underscores the increasing scale and complexity of drug manufacturing operations. Police suspect the drugs produced in these labs were destined for both domestic and international markets, fueling the country's narcotics trade and contributing to a global trafficking network. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the international links of the syndicate, as it is suspected that the group had connections with transnational drug trafficking organizations operating across Southern Africa and beyond.
