🪖🇷🇺🇵🇰 Russia and Pakistan step up counter-terrorism cooperation The 12th meeting of the Russian-Pakistani Working Group on Countering International Terrorism was recently held in Islamabad. Sultan M. Hali, a military analyst and former Pakistani Air Force colonel, shared his views with Sputnik: 🔸 This bilateral format fills a gap that multilateral platforms like the SCO and the UN cannot address — they are slow and constrained by bureaucracy. 🔸 Pakistan values Russia's counter-terrorism experience from Syria and the North Caucasus, particularly in urban warfare, drone suppression, and counter-insurgency. Cooperation with Moscow also provides Pakistan with political cover within the SCO and the UN, reinforcing its image as a responsible stakeholder in regional security. 🔸 Russia's expertise in surveillance, cyber defense, and counter-drone systems complements Pakistan's operational needs. In return, Pakistan offers decades of counter-insurgency experience, including counter-IED tactics, hostage rescue, and urban clearance operations. 🔸 Its border management expertise — especially along the porous Afghan frontier — offers insights into infiltration patterns. Pakistan's deradicalization programs, such as the Sabaoon initiative in Swat, provide lessons beyond kinetic operations that could prove valuable for Russia in Central Asia. "This meeting should be seen not as a one-off event, but as part of a longer trajectory," Hali noted. He added that Russia is diversifying beyond its traditional partnerships with China and India, while Pakistan is broadening its security diplomacy beyond ties to the US, Saudi Arabia, and China.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif visited Quetta today along with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI(M), HJ, COAS & CDF, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah. Governor Balochistan Jaffer khan Mandokhel and Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfaraz Bugti were also present during the visit. The Prime Minister was comprehensively briefed on the overall security environment in Balochistan, with particular focus on recent terrorist incidents, ongoing intelligence-based operations and measures being undertaken by the Military and the Law Enforcement Agencies for the safety and security of the people of the province. The Prime Minister paid tribute to the Shuhada who rendered the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and expressed solidarity with their families. He reaffirmed the support of the entire nation with its armed forces, law enforcement agencies and the people of Balochistan in the fight against terrorism. The Prime Minister emphasized that peace in Balochistan is central to Pakistan’s stability, progress and prosperity. He highlighted that efforts of the enemies of Pakistan to stall our positive trajectory, development and progress will not be allowed to succeed. The Prime Minister, while expressing concern at the recent incidents, acknowledged the untiring efforts and resolve of the Law Enforcement Agencies fighting the menace of Indian sponsored terrorism in Balochsitan. Soon after their release, many began moving in a coordinated manner toward Pakistan. In addition, sentences of another 4,300 prisoners have been reduced, and this second group is widely expected to be absorbed into the TTP’s ranks. With thousands of trained operatives now back on the ground, the threat of fresh attacks inside Pakistan has significantly increased. Afghanistan’s internal situation is deteriorating at a rapid pace, and extremist groups are rushing to exploit the growing security vacuum. Reports also suggest that many of these freed militants are preparing to link up with IS-KP, raising the risk of a renewed wave of regional terrorism. Pakistan’s security institutions remain on high alert, and the international community must recognize the serious consequences of Kabul’s decisions before the situation spirals further out of control.

According to Iftikhar Firdous, at least 11 of Mangal's associates have been confirmed killed, although the final casualty toll remains unclear. Some pro-Taliban accounts have previously accused Mangal of being the mastermind behind the Islamic State group in Balochistan, though these claims remain contested. The attack came on the same day Pakistan's military spokesperson said that 42 members of pro-government forces, including militias and regular security forces, had been killed over four days in attacks by the BLA and TTP in Balochistan. If the reported fatalities from today's attack are included, the total death toll would rise to 53 over the past five days in the province. Security Operation in Shewa Kills 18 FAK Militants, Locals Aided The Escape On 18 May 2026, security forces conducted a successful intelligence-based operation in Shewa, North Waziristan, eliminating 18 FAK militants during the engagement. According to officials, a video has surfaced showing some local individuals attempting to assist the militants during the operation. The footage shows these facilitators trying to create a shield around the militants and open a route for them to escape the cordon. Officials said that militants often hide among civilians and rely on local support networks to obstruct security operations. They noted that such facilitation poses a major obstacle to counter-terrorism efforts in the area. Authorities stated that both the militants and their local supporters are undermining regional stability for their own objectives. Security forces reaffirmed their commitment to continue operations against militants and their facilitators despite these challenges.
