UK police have arrested an 85 year old woman in Manchester for a peaceful protest after she held a sign reading "I oppose genocide. I support Palestine action" and refused to put it away. She was detained under section 13 of the Terrorism Act, with officers claiming she was supporting a proscribed group after the UK government designated Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation in July. The move has been widely described by rights groups and legal critics as a political proscription and a deeply controversial use of terrorism powers. Protest organisers said they were demonstrating against the UK Government’s complicity in Israel’s genocide and the political ban on Palestine Action. Critics say the proscription itself was largely driven by aggressive lobbying from Israeli networks determined to crush any protest action against arms companies enabling Israel’s genocide.
