This past Saturday at the Amphitheater in Jabulani, Soweto. South African citizens must remember that elected officials are not superstar celebrities who are in power for self-interests. They are elected officials whose main mandate must be to attend to the needs of the people. I also took the opportunity to drive a point that we can’t be spectators in the economy of the land, citizens must be primary beneficiaries of the economy. Drug peddling and dealing must be dealt with decisively, we can’t have the future of our country being killed right in front of our eyes and we watch, give nicknames to this genocide by calling our children nyaope boys. [Watch]

While others are signing autocracy into law, President Hakainde Hichilema has today entrenched the right to education into the echelons of the Zambian constitution and stated that no person in the future should be able to reverse that right. He also argued that free education will not compromise the quality of education if implemented properly. Here is a leader who has defined his legacy and helped all children of Zambia to gain access to free primary and secondary education.

It is the responsibility of government, including law enforcement agencies, to defend our people, defend our sovereignty and uphold the law, ensuring that the country is safe and secure. Those involved in organising this disruptive behaviour, accompanied by violence — and we have heard that there have been fatalities — will have to bear the costs of their criminal actions. They will also be held civilly liable. I do not know if many of them are aware that they can be held civilly liable for any injury or damage to property resulting from their efforts at incitement. So, what we are experiencing is not costless, and that must become part of the national conversation.” Professor Firoz Cachalia, South Africa’s Acting Minister of Police.
