Age of Empires 2 (Ensemble Studios, 1999). The amount of time we spent on this one was almost unspeakable. The golden age of LAN setups, meaning 5 of us would pack up our computers and head over to a friend's house, setup the LAN and play nonstop throughout the weekend, with little sleep in between. Mind you, "packing up computers" meant tower (heavy), monitor (heavier!), keyboards, speakers, mouse, cables, the LAN connect pieces (what a pain when you forgot it!) - and then carry that on a bus, train or subway for 30-60 mins. And it was SO very worth it. The decision was then: Duke Nukem 3D, Age of Empires 2, Counter Strike... or CivNet if we felt a bit more like just chilling. Setting up the LAN and synching everything, ah, thank God we had some who were a bit more technically skilled than others. The 3 on 3 battles in Age of Empires were epic, rarely less than 4 hours per session. Most of the sounds live rent free in my head, especially the alarm bells. Good times! I miss them.
