Buried in it is Section 24220, which requires new vehicles to include technology that can detect driver impairment and disable the car. The stated goal is to prevent drunk driving, with systems that monitor blood alcohol levels and stop a vehicle from starting if you’re over the limit. It sounds reasonable at first. But it raises serious concerns about how both government and manufacturers could misuse this kind of control in a dystopian fashion. Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna have pushed to defund enforcement of this mandate, but have faced bipartisan resistance. This is how your civil liberties are chipped away. In the name of safety, the government gains the ability to control how you use a car you paid for and already pay taxes on.
