Pope Leo XIV says that he and the Vatican rejects Cardinal Marx move to allow the blessing of homosexual couples in his Diocese: “The Holy See has already spoken to the German bishops. The Holy See has made it clear that we do not agree with the formalized blessing of couples, in this case, homosexual couples, as you asked, or couples in irregular situations, beyond what was specifically, if you will, allowed for by Pope Francis in saying all people receive blessings. When a priest gives a blessing at the end of Mass, when the Pope gives a blessing at the end of a large celebration like the one we had today, they are blessings for all people. Francis’ well-known expression ‘Tutti, tutti, tutti’ is an expression of the Church’s belief that all are welcome; all are invited; all are invited to follow Jesus, and all are invited to look for conversion in their lives. Speaking on the plane he said: “this particular trip to Turkey and to Lebanon has, as you know, first of all, the very meaning of unity celebrating 1700 years from the Council of Nicaea” “I very much have been looking forward to this trip because of what it means for all Christians. But it's also a great message to the whole world and in a special way, with the presence of myself, of the Church, of believers in both Turkey and in Lebanon. Each question reflected on one of the themes of the Vigil: friendship, courage, and spirituality. In his last act at his final public appearance, the retiring Apostolic Nuncio Cardinal Christophe Pierre read the Proclamation of Pope Leo XIV appointing Archbishop Golka as Archbishop of Denver. He then presented it to him in Latin. When a bishop is installed, he takes the Decree and presents it to the Presbyteral Council of Priests and then to all the priests of the diocese and then the entire congregation. It’s a beautiful tradition respecting the authority of the Pope.

Pope Leo XIV on Holy Thursday returned the Mass of the Lord’s Supper to the Basilica of St. John Lateran, reviving a papal practice last observed there in 2012 under Benedict XVI. Departing from Pope Francis’ custom of celebrating the liturgy in prisons or migrant centers, Leo celebrated the rite in the cathedral of Rome and washed the feet of 12 priests of the Diocese of Rome. Pope Leo XIV held his first meeting with Dame Sarah Mullally, the new Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to lead the Church of England and the Anglican Communion. During their audience at the Vatican, the Pope encouraged Catholics and Anglicans to continue the path of dialogue and unity, acknowledging that new challenges have made full communion more difficult. He warned that it would be a “scandal” not only to fail in the common mission of making Christ known, but also to stop working to overcome divisions, “no matter how intractable they may appear.”

Hicks as metropolitan archbishop of New York….” During his first press conference in StPatsNYC, Archbishop Hicks shared a little about his background, explaining that he was “formed in Chicago, in the Archdiocese Chicago, under the care of Cardinal Bernardin [d. 1996], through the witness of Cardinal George [d. 2015], and by the mentorship of Cardinal Cupich. For all of them, I’m deeply grateful.” Similarly, he told Vatican News: “I was blessed to work with Cardinal Cupich for six years in the Archdiocese of Chicago before being named in Joliet, where I became the Ordinary for the past five years. During that time, I worked with him and a lot of very talented people. So, I learned some basic skills of governance, of administration, and also how to set priorities and keeping the mission of the Church in the center. I think that's probably one of the greatest things I learned.” Aside from the problem of being formed “under the care of Cardinal Bernardin” (see The Rite of Sodomy by Randy Engel for details), Archbishop Hicks celebrates the fact that he was mentored by Cardinal Cupich — one of the worst prelates in the American hierarchy (a spiritual son of “Uncle Ted” McCarrick). Under Cupich, Hicks says he learned “how to set priorities and keeping the mission of the Church in the center.” Does Cardinal Cupich even know what the mission of the Church is (hint: the salvation and sanctification of souls), let alone keep it at the center of anything he does? I hope and pray that Archbishop Hicks (who will eventually be Cardinal Hicks) ends up doing great things in and for Archdiocese of New York, but let’s be clear: he is self-admittedly a protégé of Cardinal Cupich, and that is deeply concerning.

On the flight home from his trip to Africa, Pope Leo XIV was asked how he avoids lending moral legitimacy to authoritarian rulers when he meets them during papal trips. The pope said such encounters can be interpreted in different ways, but he returned to the pastoral purpose of travel and the diplomatic mission of the Holy See. “Certainly, the presence of a pope with any head of state can be interpreted in different ways,” he said. “I would go back to something I said in my initial remarks about the importance of understanding the primary purpose of the travel that I do, that the pope does to visit the people.” He also defended the Vatican’s continued diplomatic engagement even with difficult governments. “We don’t always make great proclamations, criticizing, judging, or condemning,” he said. “But there’s an awful lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to promote justice, to promote humanitarian causes.” That work, he said, can include efforts to free political prisoners and respond to hunger and sickness. “So the Holy See, by maintaining if you will, a neutrality, and looking for ways to continue our positive diplomatic relationship with so many different countries, we’re actually trying to find a way to apply the Gospel to concrete situations, so that the lives of people can be improved.”

Let people in, and be prepared to go out,” the pope said in his homily for the Mass on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Eight of the new priests were ordained for the Diocese of Rome, of which the pope is bishop: Guglielmo Lapenna, Giorgio Larosa, Jos Emanuele Nleme Sabate, Giovanni Emanuele Nunziante Salazar, Antonino Ordine, Yordan Camilo Ramos Medina, Daniele Riscica, and Cristian Sguazzino.
