JUST IN: Pope Leo SIV issues urgent plea for peace in Middle East & Iran, warning about risk of an “irreparable chasm” “I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and Iran in these dramatic moments. Peace is not built with threat and arms which will only result in destructions and death, but only through reasonable dialogue that is also authentic and responsible. Let us call on the parties involved to take up the moral responsibility and end the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable chasm. May diplomacy recover its role so it can promote the good of peoples and promote peace founded on justice. We continue to pray for peace.”

Towards the end of his General Audience, Pope Leo XIV expressed his solidarity with all Christians in the Middle East. “I am close to you, and the whole Church stands with you.” He said the recent attack on the church in Damascus highlights “the deep fragility” that Syria continues to live through after years of instability and violence. The Pope also shared that he continues to closely and hopefully follow the situation in Iran, Israel, and Palestine. He once again called for an end to violence in the region and reiterated the need for peace.
