Popeye was created by Elzie Crisler Segar, who in 1929 introduced the character into his existing newspaper cartoon strip, Thimble Theatre. Popeye is a scrappy little seaman with bulging forearms, a squinty eye, and a screwed-up face, punctuated with an ever-present pipe in his mouth.

He is known for his distinctive appearance, his love of spinach, and his superhuman strength, especially in his forearms. Created by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, Popeye made his debut in the comic strip "Thimble Theatre" on January 17, 1929.

Elzie Crisler Segar invented Popeye. His first appearance was in 1929's "Thimble Theatre," Segar's 1919 comic strip. After becoming the strip's title character, Popeye was adapted into animated cartoons, merchandise, and other media.
