They had relief on the money they had to pay in repaying their loans ... That struck at the very heart of my philosophy—"every man a capitalist." He also did some other increases in taxation ... I never had a Value Added Tax (VAT) on necessities of any kind: There was none on food, household fuel, public transport, housing, rents or children's clothes. So you could say that if you were poor, you didn't pay any indirect tax. My successor tried to put a VAT of 17.5% on household fuel. People rebelled—even our own party rebelled and I could understand it. It was not only putting a tax on fuel, it was undermining our essential equation that you never had VAT on necessities. Both sides of the house voted that tax down, but left the tax at 8%. This was another main reason why we were voted out [in 1997], because we were going against true conservative policy.
