Oh I'm a big LeMay fan I was referring to the post-war aftermath, when a great many of the NCOs, enlisted, etc. who committed crimes against our men weren't hanged. They should have been hanged

I think it flows from FDR and Truman losing China to the Soviets, we had to pivot hard to rehabilitate Japan into an anti-communist position. It makes sense but it is baffling that there was no proper reckoning with their war crimes.

Merciful ?? The vid above is a good example of American mercy. Not to mention Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Or the postwar brothels where US soldiers could enjoy the charms of Japanese girls for a piece of chewing gum or Hersheys chocolate, until 1953, if I'm correct.
