The problem isn't that it's a weak rom-com — the first one never was one. Practical Magic worked as a grief film in pastel: two sisters, a curse standing in for inherited fear, a kitchen at midnight. Sequels remake the tone and miss the wound.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) made my weekend. I gave this film the Five Star Treatment in my review below & I can’t get over 1) how powerful the story was & 2) the excellence of the visuals overall. This entire experience was something I’ll never forget & I’m pissed at myself for not having seen this film sooner. What a weekend.

I didn’t jive with The Brink of War (🌟🌟) in large part because I didn’t buy Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan for even a second. As I write in my full review below (which I hope you indulge & is saved on my Highlights tab with all my reviews), Daniels has taken himself really seriously since The Newsroom came out in 2010. I don’t think this was a role fit for him & it’s a big reason I cannot in good faith recommend this film.

Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is a standout film released this year & has so much fucking heart, I can’t put it into words. I’m a huge fan of the man who directed this film, Matthew Johnson. I think he’s got a clear creative vision & at the end of the day, he’s flat-out funny. As I wrote in my lengthy review back in April, this film literally improved my mood. This is just another example of how great 2026 has been for Cinema.

In the Hand of Dante (🌟🌟) really let me down. I had such high expectations for this film, but despite its audacious goals, Dante is a film that bites off way, way more than it can chew. I didn’t really like Martin Scorsese’s appearance in this film, and I definitely didn’t like Gal Gadot. I’d love to hear from others who’ve seen this- I can’t be the only one to feel this way.

2026 is the Year of Olivia Wilde. Fresh off The Invite, Wilde & Cooper Hoffman absolutely crush it in I Want Your Sex (🌟🌟🌟🌟). This film is now available on streaming & I strongly believe you should run to it. As I wrote in my full review below, Hoffman unquestionably has the juice. See this film.

That’s a bullshit rating. My review of Michael (🌟🌟🌟) is pinned to my profile right now & it’s definitely better than a Rotten Score simply because of Jaafar Jackson’s performance. As I state in my review, Michael does a great job focusing on MJ’s music. I recommend this film.

Callum Turner’s performance in One Night Only (🌟🌟) is staggeringly bland. Prior to this film, I was lukewarm on Turner & didn’t really have strong opinions about him. But his comedic timing is really weak in this movie & his performance desperately lacks charisma. You guys know that Jack Nicholson is my all time favorite actor. He is the definition of charisma. In One Night Only? Turner is the anthesis of charisma. I don’t take pleasure in being so critical of Turner but I have to call balls & strikes as I see them.

I talk about the memories my sister and I have watching this film every time we visited my abuela in Madrid. Rewatching this made my weekend. Sam Raimi, you are my forever king.

Tuner (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) is now available on demand & it’s the second best film I’ve seen this year behind The Invite. At 88, Dustin Hoffman is still giving us Cinema magic. I can’t tell you how awesome it is seeing Hoffman contribute to such a good film at this stage of his life. Leo Woodall blew me away here. See this film.

Every last actor in Pressure (🌟🌟🌟🌟) kicks ass. That includes Andrew Scott & Brendan Fraser, who are the primary reasons I think you should see this film- in addition to a great story. Pressure feels like a film out of the ‘90s that’s not designed to win awards or break box office records. This is just a damn good movie worthy of your time.

The Gentlemen is Guy Ritchie at his best. I forced myself to revisit this film as a reminder that yes, Ritchie can actually make a good film. This after I nearly collapsed from boredom after watching Ritchie’s newest release In the Grey (🌟🌟) featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill. In the Grey is not good. You can’t make that statement about The Gentlemen. This film’s release was really impacted by COVID, but man it’s a great movie.
