Without a doubt, most ball-dominant kids aren’t great finishers. The reason is they really don’t get that many reps in practice and when they train on their own they tend to shoot on the run or time and room shots. It’s boring and not even useful to practice finishing without a goalie. And even if you have a goalie, finishing on a 6x6 net with a goalie is just too easy. If you want to be a big-time finisher, you can practice in your backyard “Shooting on dad!” We started doing this during the COVID lockdown with my family and not only was it a blast, my kids all got better at finishing. Your dad will definitely be harder to finish on than any goalie in a 6x6 net! Use a 3’6’’ x 3’6’’ JM3 net. This goal size is perfect because it’s a little smaller than a box net, which is designed for the goalie to have goalie pads. Your dad will love it and I guarantee you’ll get way better at finishing fast!

Reverts often feel a bit intimidated by recitation. I get it, Arabic is a deep language. But you don’t have to do it perfectly right from the start. I’m far from perfect after years. If your intent is to increase your learning, to get a bit better each day - then it doesn’t have to be intimidating. It’s very fulfilling. Recitation increases your understanding of the faith and brings about a sense of inner calm. Make it a regular part of your schedule 🤝💚

For all the kids out there with a dream to play hockey at a high level, two things that scouts look at A LOT you may not realize: 1. You’d be shocked at how many scouts have LiveBarn accounts. They want to watch you practice to see how much you value getting better. There’s a long road between where you are today and the level you aspire to be at - they want to know you’re going to put in the work to get better so you’re able to play at the next level. 2. They’re watching you on the bench. How do you interact with your teammates? Do you take coaching? Are you pumped for your teammates and engaged in the game? Do you have good body language? These intangibles are what get scouts excited on top of what they see on the ice. It’s the little things that make championship players and teams.

Most freshmen don’t struggle because they’re untalented. They struggle because everything is new. New environment. New system. Away from family. And the talent level? Just as good, if not better. Many expect to start right away. Most don’t. So when the struggle comes, and it will, take a lesson from Tom Brady. Early in his career, Brady got 2 practice reps. The starter got 20. He asked his coach, “How can I get better with only two?” The answer: “Make those two perfect.” So he treated them like the Super Bowl. Full speed. Full focus. No wasted motion. Two reps became four. Four became ten. Ten became a starting job. What separated him wasn’t talent. It was how he treated limited opportunities. Most backups focus on the reps they didn’t get.
