Premier Danielle Smith announces Alberta will move from a global health budgeting model to activity-based funding. Says hospitals have no accountability under current system and limits use of chartered surgical facilities. New system will allow for more private competition.

Smith says Alberta's new model is based on other countries, such as Australia. Adds that opening up surgical competition incentivizes volume. Says hospitals can still get more funding if ORs are efficient, or even rent out OR rooms to private doctors to perform surgeries.

This is a horrible idea. Public health often works in prevention, where the "value" isn’t always measurable in immediate outputs. This will add bureaucratic overhead. It defeats the purpose of efficiency and flexibility she wants to improve upon

Canadian healthcare needs a change. What we are doing isn’t working. Throwing more and more money isn’t solving the problem either. Canada doesn’t have to use the American model. There is lots of successful models in g20 countries that work better and cost less
