Dabo Swinney shares what separates the great players he's been around. "You gotta embrace the suck. The great players that I've been around…they love the preparation." Most people tolerate preparation. They get through it to get to the game. But the great ones? They find purpose in it. They understand that how you prepare is how you will perform. Excellence is a daily habit.

it’s Simple not Easy. You will give yourself the opportunity to be a Champion only when you’ve put the work in, Preparation is Hard, Hard Work, Hard Training, Hard Choices with diet and recovery and sleep. But when you’ve prepared and not “cheated the preparation process” you know, you know you can trade on that preparation and become a Champion. Just listen to these guys, they knew going into the race, they knew because they have given a lifetime of honest preparation

Dan Hurley says coaches should be a jockey in practice and a corner man during games “I understand the two different roles I’ve got to play for the players in preparation. In practices, I’ve got to push for game-like reps so that on game night they can execute.” “On game night, I go to boxing trainer in the corner with the fighter, pumping them up, building up their confidence.” “You’ve got this practice persona where you push for the preparation, and then on game night you become that person that’s trying to convince them throughout the game that they can do anything.” “Any anger you see on game night for me is always at the referees. They know I love them. I invested time in them, so they let me do my job.”

🔥 A great warm-up should prepare players to think—not just sweat. In this three-player drill, PGC Basketball CEO Mano Watsa challenges players to create space, use pass fakes, read the defender and make the right decision in real time. The goal isn’t to memorize a pattern. It’s to develop players who can pull back, stay composed and recognize what the defense gives them. Because once the game starts, the best players don’t simply execute moves. 📖 They read. 🧠 They decide. 🏀 They make the next play. Coaches: Try adding this to your next practice warm-up. #PGCBasketball #ThinkTheGame #BasketballIQ #PlayerDevelopment #BasketballTraining #CoachingBasketball #BasketballDrills #DecisionMaking

Jalen Brunson shares what separates great players from good players. "One thing that separates great players from good players is their detail. They detail the little things." "Those great players, they really take pride in just watching film, watching what they eat, and making sure they're in the best shape of their life - just to get that edge." Little details make big differences. The greats obsess over what others overlook. "A true believer is just being able to believe in yourself, being able to believe in the process - that what you're doing is the right thing for you." "I have the answers to the test. They're in my back pocket. I just need to be able to study them and know that I'm gonna do well on the test." Preparation is confidence. When you've done the work, you already have the answers and know what needs to be done. It means living the details, believing in the process, and trusting your preparation (🎥SLAM)

At Triton, the spotlight often shines on the players, but behind every hand is a dealer holding the game together. This short film takes you behind the scenes, into the rhythm, pressure, and quiet mastery it takes to run the biggest games in poker. They don’t play the hands. They don’t chase the titles. But without them, none of it happens. To the people who keep the game moving, day in and day out — thank you. This is the world of a Triton dealer. #TritonPoker

The Secret to Championship Culture? If you look closely at this drill, you might just see a group of guys messing around on the floor...... But shared laughter builds trust. When players share these authentic, unguarded moments, that chemistry translates directly to how they support each other when the real game gets tough. You don't always need a basketball and a hoop to get better. Sometimes, you just need to create an environment where athletes can compete, connect, and remember why they love playing the game in the first place. Find ways to break the monotony this week. Get on the floor. #PGCBasketball #PlayerDevelopment #TeamCulture #BasketballTraining #CompeteEveryday #Leadership

The Hidden Cost of Intelligence. “You walk into a room and everyone is laughing is something you don’t find funny. Talking about things that seem trivial. Surface level, safe. And you smile, you nod you play along. But inside you’re somewhere else entirely. you’re thinking about the conversation beneath the conversation. The patterns no one mentions. The questions no one’s asking…. “Intelligence isn’t just about knowing more. It’s perceiving more. Connecting dots that others don’t see. Following thoughts to their logical conclusion. Even when those conclusions are uncomfortable. Here’s the problem. Most people don’t wanna go there. They don’t want to question the game. They want to play it”

Matt Painter shares a masterclass on emotional control and why it's the difference between winning and losing. "There are certain things you absolutely can't control." "I ref our practices by myself and I never run. Think about how many times I'm out of position and I just guess. I always tell them that." "They say, 'Coach, you missed this, you missed this.' I said, 'Learn to play the game. Move to the next play. Don't be emotional. That's what a real player does.'" Learn how to focus better and master the next-play mentality. Then he called out what went wrong: "Emotional people in basketball and in business - they're not good decision makers. We got emotional there." Frustration is understandable. Letting it control your decisions is a choice. "Worry about what you can control. There are certain things we could control tonight that we didn't do a very good job of and it has nothing to do with actually playing the game." "Very fortunate to learn a hard lesson and still win the game." You have to be able to manage where you focus. The refs aren't always right. The calls won't always go your way. Control your emotions or they'll control you. (🎥 Boilers In The Stands)

Why game companies focus on graphics instead of gameplay? 1) the devs must show the game to upper management. They don't play it. They just look at the cut scenes. So to get greenlit you need cool cut scenes that the players will probably skip. 2) the game journalists who review your game only care about screen shots. They will play it for maybe 10 minutes. Superficial looks, not depth, is what they will review. I'm not decrying graphics. Great graphics make a game better. But game play entices players. If devs ignore management and journalists you can get incredible games. Remember Dwarf Fortress? And look at Fallout: New Vegas - really, kind of chunky graphics even for its time, but terrific gameplay. Also neaer-perfect soundtrack.

Hall of Fame San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich on why winning is not really about plays. It is about PEOPLE: Relationships are the foundation of every winning culture. 🧱 Because a player who feels truly seen, known and valued will go further than one who simply feels coached. 📡 And you have to be yourself because players can sense what is real and what is fake. You cannot build a genuine relationship with someone unless they see the real you and believe that the real you genuinely cares about them. The temptation for every coach is to tell players what they want to hear so they will like you, rather than telling them what they need to hear because you are afraid they might not. The best coaches are willing to risk being disliked in the moment to help a player become better in the future. They do not lead for approval. They lead from a place of deep care. ❤️ They are willing to put their reputation at risk, have uncomfortable conversations and reject the label of a “players’ coach” if that is what it takes to get the best out of the people they are responsible for leading. Sports may be a competitive entertainment business, but every business will always come down to the people you are building with. Worry less about the play you are running and more about your true purpose as a leader: 🫗 Pouring into the people entrusted to you.

STOP ON TWO FEET. It's not a suggestion. Watch how many "good" players in your gym can't do this simple thing. They catch it moving. They land on one foot, then the other, off balance, travel waiting to happen — and nobody says a word because the ball still went in. Here's the truth nobody tells your kid: the jump stop is a skill, not an accident. Two feet, same time, under control, ready to pivot either direction, ready to shoot, pass, or go. That's not footwork for footwork's sake — that's the difference between a player who's in control of the game and a player the game is happening to. Most kids never get taught this. They get taught to score. Nobody teaches them how to stop. This is what we work on. Not because it looks good on a highlight reel — it won't. Because it's the stuff that separates players who last from players who flash and disappear. Two feet. Every time. No exceptions. That's Basketball IQ. That's the work. #BasketballIQ #PGCBasketball #Fundamentals #JumpStop #PlayerDevelopment #StopOnTwoFeet #FootworkFirst

ELON: THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD STICK TO BEING THE REFEREE “The government's role is to ensure that the playing field is a good playing field. That there are good rules. The government is essentially the referee, making sure that there's fair play, that the rules are sensible, and allowing the players on the field to play the game. And what happens over time is that the government keeps growing, and at a certain point, you have more referees than players on the field. Then, the game is not good. I'm not saying you don't need referees, but you don't want the referees to outnumber the players. That would be silly, but that's often what happens. So, just make sure that fair games are being played, that there are sensible rules, and don't get in the way of the players. And the results will be excellent.” Source: Cato Institute Conference, June 2024

James Harden on if the Clippers loss against the Wolves is deflating: “It's not just this game. It’s the Milwaukee game in Milwaukee. You look at the Laker game, like this [game]. I could point to a handful of games. It's not about another team. It's about us and that's what we preach and that's what it is. No matter who we play. And if we're healthy and our energy is right, it doesn't matter who we play.”

Nick Saban has always asked this question about Leadership... "How many guys on the team need to be led?" Coach Saban believed in the power of Collective Leadership with his teams. 1. Are most players on your team bought in? 2. Do most players on your team set a good example? These players do not need someone to impact or influence them if they are already making these choices and leading by example. This is the power of collective leadership. Collective leadership is vital to successful teams. I believe there are 7 types of Collective Leaders that all teams need: 1. The GAMER - When the game is on the line. Who does the team look to? Who wants the ball in their hand? It is the Game Leader. They don't "have" to lead in other ways, but it would be best if they did. This player is often the ultimate competitor on the team. 2. The WORKER - Winning Teams have Practice Leaders. They bring energy and focus to each practice. They ensure competitive and strong practices. They Lead by Example. You practice much more than you play. 3. The GATEKEEPER - This leader ensures the Team Culture is Maintained. They put out the fires. They keep the team accountable. Especially when the coach is not there. They are essential in WINNING Teams. 4. The COMMUNICATOR - It is a long season. There will be difficult days. Teams need the Communicator to get through these tough days. They often provide humor and can lighten the mood. They have high Emotional Intelligence. This is an Underappreciated Leader. 5. The CONNECTOR - These players are often your “glue” players. They keep the team connected on the court or field as well as in the locker room and in social settings. 6. The ENERGY GIVER - The Energy Giver brings Positive Energy Every Day! Their Energy is Contagious! This leader knows that nothing great can be accomplished without Enthusiasm. The Energy Leader brings positive energy each day. They feed the team! 7. The SERVER - Finally, the Server embodies Servant Leadership. They are all about the TEAM. They bring a WE-first mentality to all they do. Their focus on the TEAM creates a contagious WE>ME mentality throughout the team. Collective Leadership WINS. _____ Follow me for more actionable ideas on coaching, leadership, and personal growth. Subscribe to my newsletter, 🏆 Great Teams Better Leaders 123. Michael Jordan says today’s NBA players don’t have his ‘Love of the Game’ clause “It was the basis of my career. My love of the game within my contract, which I’m positive now, don’t have that clause within the contract” “If I was driving down the street and I see a basketball game on the side of the road, I can go play in that basketball game and if I get hurt, my contract is still guaranteed” “I love the game so much that I would never let someone take the opportunity for me to play the game away from me” “As opposed to now, where you don’t have it. Players probably don’t play. Now they get individual attention with their trainer. You go out and shoot 100 shots or a 1,000 shots” “I found it to my benefit was go play basketball, man”
