The Trump administration is scaling back on its crackdown on asylum, now allowing immigrants from several countries to apply for asylum in the U.S. The pause on asylum was put on pause after an Afghan man, who was granted asylum in the U.S. in 2025, shot two members of the National Guard in Washington, D.C. – killing one of them. The pause on asylum was only partially lifted, with Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Afghanistan, Nigeria and others still facing a so-called travel ban. People from these countries still cannot be granted asylum.

The CIA said Thursday that Lakanwal previously worked with the U.S. government, including the CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar that ended in 2021 following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed Sunday that the suspect was "radicalized since he's been here in this country."
