This is one of the most psychotic, evil-genius moves I’ve ever seen late in a basketball game. Darrion Williams had only attempted four free throws in two games up to this point in San Francisco. Florida surprised him by purposely fouling him in the backcourt. The #Gators forced him to suddenly snap into focus from the (relative) calm of the backcourt, without the work-your-way-into-the-heat-of-battle causeway to free throws that usually happens when a guy goes to work in the paint or is jumping up for a shot. Basically forced him to flip a switch and hit the clutchest of clutch free throws. He did not. But let’s say that he hit two free throws. It’s still an advanced analytics move to do this here because it extends the game and grants you more possessions to come back. Most teams wait until the 40 or 50 seconds before they start fouling. Todd Golden does it with nearly THREE MINUTES left in the game, giving his team a chance to come back in the twilight between normal game mode and desperation mode. That way, if your ensuing possession doesn’t net points, you still have that much more time to claw back because you didn’t let the opponent bleed 30 seconds off the clock. Of course, it turned out to be the best possible outcome. Williams missed the front end of the one-and-one, Haugh buried a three, and Florida came back to win.
