Since tick season is upon us, I thought I’d share the tool I use for tick removal. It’s called the Tick Key. It’s super easy to use, as I demonstrate in the video. I’d rather be prepared with a proper removal tool than MacGyver removing a tick with tweezers and risk not getting the whole tick out, which can cause more problems afterward. After removal, it’s always a good idea to clean the area and keep an eye on it for any irritation or symptoms. Stay safe out there this season!🌿

She stressed that catching issues early may help prevent them from becoming chronic. Her advice: remove the tick carefully by pulling straight out without twisting, and make sure no parts remain embedded in the skin. She also shared some integrative approaches she personally keeps on hand, including topical andrographis and “binder poultices” made with substances like bentonite clay, zeolite, or fulvic and humic acid mixed with water and applied to the bite area. Today, the Senate unanimously passed my bipartisan bill with Senator Tina Smith to reauthorize the Kay Hagan Tick Act, which we first authored in 2019. Maine reported 4,257 cases of Lyme disease last year – more than three times the number of cases reported just six years ago – and 2026 is projected to set yet another record. This is a record that we do not want to set. Our bill will expand efforts to combat Lyme and other tick-borne diseases while supporting promising work already underway in Maine, including a clinical trial for a human Lyme disease vaccine at the MaineHealth Institute for Research and the University of Maine Tick Lab, where Mainers can submit ticks to be identified and tested for pathogens.

A single female can clone herself and lay thousands of eggs without a male. Populations explode rapidly. The ticks swarm livestock and pets in such massive numbers that they can cause fatal blood loss. If you find a tick, secure it to a card with cellophane tape and report it to your veterinarian immediately for species identification.
