I have never met an aggressive cat. I have met defensive and scared ones. But never purposely aggressive. Have patience and show love with your voice, food, and gentle touch if they will let you. Eventually, they will meet you more than halfway.

I learned from watching that Dog Whisperer guy that animals who appear aggressive are simply afraid. Once they get past fear, they become lovable.

I had a 30lb cat, possibly maine coon, that the shelter tried to talk me out of adopting- they even brought out a vet tech with fresh stitches to tell me 'DON'T try to cut his nails!' I did indeed cut his nails, and aside from two instances where he ripped me apart (when scared), he was a total smoosh.

Maybe everyone at the shelter were a bunch of assholes?
