Specifically, because there was a lot of chatter and pressure around that production about the ending. And about the idea that it should be reshot, or we should do it differently. That he should win. Literally, the ideas were as bad as he should punch out the kid. You should realize he’s gonna nail him. He should have a recorder on him and be busting him. All these things. And all it was was this like terror. And Richard was the one who really stood firm. Almost to the point of refusing to do anything else. He was like ‘Did anybody see what we just did here?!” He was kind of pointing at me, and he was like ‘this is how you use me to best effect.’ Because I’m slick, it’s a body blow. ‘The last shot of the movie is me standing with my shoulders sagging, punched in the face. Richard Gere says many big-name young actors auditioned for the role in Primal Fear (1996), but "they did fine with the crazy part... but they weren't believable as being normal." Gere recalled, "I was ready to walk because I said we can't do it without an actor who can play that part, it won't work." Then Edward Norton walked into an open call. Gere said, "This kid walked in, I think he's really terrific." After Norton's first test, Gere remembered, "He was fabulous. And we all went, 'Wow, what has he done?' Nothing." They tested him again, and "it was even better the second time." Gere concluded, "He was and is that kind of extraordinary talent that he can be believable and lying at the same time."

The studio wanted Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Aaron Stampler in "Primal Fear" (1996). But he turned it down. Around 2100 actors from California to England were auditioned for the role. Edward Norton and Pedro Pascal were part of the audition. Pascal said, "My first audition was for 'Primal Fear' (1996). I was totally in over my head. I auditioned for that in New York and then I went to L.A. for it. I didn’t get it and was unemployed for about 10 years." Those who had seen Norton’s two screen tests said that many of the actors vying for the role simply took a seat and began exchanging dialogue. Norton, however, chose to sit in a corner and decided that the character should have a stutter. Director Gregory Hoblit said what gave Aaron’s character such strength was Norton’s ability to appear as an ordinary person. Hoblit said, "We needed someone young and believable and who had a certain innocence about them, Edward had all of those qualities."
