PRIMITIVE BRITAIN HAS MUCH TO LEARN FROM THE GERMANS... This is how they pick up litter in Germany. They don't use men in hi-vis orange vests and ask them to risk their lives by the side of busy roads. Lorraine Dr Amir Khan GP

@reallorraine @DrAmirKhanGP Whether it's man or machine being used to pick up litter, it doesn't solve the age-old problem of why some people think it's ok to drop their litter wherever they are. For me, this has always been about education. How do we teach folk to respect their environments?

@reallorraine @DrAmirKhanGP Great idea, but what about the stuff further down that slope, tangled up in the hedgerows and not in that neat, staged line?

@reallorraine @DrAmirKhanGP Litter is a supply side problem too. Designed deliberately to throw away. It should be tackled at source as well as at destination. Who provides this stuff to us???

@reallorraine @DrAmirKhanGP What shall I say. This method is very bad for biodiversity. All the insects and flower seeds are also sucked up by such a flail mower with suction installation. And what happens to the clippings with the shredded litter? Does it go to the incinerator? Is it composted?

@reallorraine @DrAmirKhanGP Putting aside the obvious inefficiency of such a huge slow vehicle that can only pick up litter in a 1m wide strip, surely this just encourages littering if the machine is going to come pick it up?

@reallorraine @DrAmirKhanGP Great idea, and if they installed cameras at trouble spots they could fine drivers accordingly (by law, they should be made responsible for any litter thrown from their vehicle) and pay for the equipment; simples.
