In 1997, during one of his most private and protective periods, Prince specifically asked to appear on Muppets Tonight. The Muppets cut straight through the mystique and gave us a rare glimpse of a playful Prince. (Or The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. Or Symbol. Whatever.)

On this day in 1997, Prince guest starred on Muppets Tonight. He was the first guest star on Season Two of Muppets Tonight, then going under the name "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince." This guest appearance allowed Prince to show his effortless knack for comedy and perform songs alongside Kermit the Frog, Rizzo the Rat, and several other muppets. Speaking about the first read through of the script with Prince, head writer of Muppets Tonight Kirk Thatcher revealed, “He and his people seemed to get the jokes and enjoyed the fun we were having with him and he thankfully had very few notes. He just smiled and giggled quietly at the script and seemed very open to it all.” 💜

Prince was such a massive fan of THE MUPPETS, he asked if he could host the Muppets Tonight show in 1997, leading to one of the rare instances we saw a more comedic version of himself instead of the quiet and reserved persona fans were used to 😂👏

Prince appeared on the Muppets Tonight show just days after the passing of his son, Amir. He agreed to be on the show months in advance and always stuck to his committments. This must've been really hard for him to film, he only did it so his son could watch it once he got older.
