Prison inmates were asked to compare their prosocial traits—things like kindness and morality—to those of non-inmates. They rated themselves more favorably on every trait except law-abidingness, where they saw themselves as perfectly average. This fits with the “better-than-average effect,” the tendency for people to see themselves as above average on intelligence, humor, or driving skill. Even inmates view themselves as more moral than others, though rating themselves “average” on law-abidingness is ironic, given their circumstances. Some might argue that inmates are just the ones who got caught—that plenty of people break the law but don’t end up in prison. But studies, especially of violent offenders, show that they typically have a long pattern of lawbreaking before they’re finally caught and sentenced. You see the same thing with drunk driving. By the time a drunk driver is finally pulled over and arrested, they’ve typically driven intoxicated anywhere from 80 to 500 times. It usually takes a lot of offenses before someone actually gets caught.

As a reminder, here’s Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison encouraging protesters that their “sacrifice is important” and that they will win because people “are putting their bodies on the line.” He, and other Democrat leaders, encouraged their trained activists to put themselves into harms way. As a result, they got their martyrs. And now he smirks about it.

More than 200 inmates escaped from a prison and at least one was killed in a shootout in Karachi, Pakistan, after they were temporarily moved out of their cells due to earthquake tremors, officials said Tuesday. The provincial law minister told reporters at the scene the inmates were allowed into the courtyard and there was “panic” because of the tremors. The inmates were still outside the cells when a group suddenly attacked guards, seized their weapons, opened fire and fled. A senior police official said 216 inmates fled the prison in the capital of Sindh province. Of those, 78 had been recaptured. No one convicted or facing trial as a militant was among those who fled, he said.

Authorities say the inmates used jail phone calls to plan the escape. A friend picked them up and took them to one of the inmates’ girlfriend’s home. She then ordered them a Lyft to Miami, where they were tracked and taken into custody.
