At one time, part of the legacy of those who went to schools like Phillips, Exeter, Saint Paul’s, Deerfield, etc. was the understanding of their privilege they enjoyed and a corresponding sense of obligation and duty to society that such privilege demanded. What happened?

Bro, you’re being stupid sorry your privilege has miseducated you. You can’t just substitute anybody in your circumstance and get the same result. A lot went into you being able to have the courage to even do a pitch go to a nice college all of that that I’ll have to do with your personal choices and your personal behavior and your ability not to fold or cave. You can’t just say that everybody that would go through your exact circumstances would end up with the same success. A lot of them would fail at several points along the way. You have to understand that this deterministic point of view just as incorrect when studied. People are just not interchangeable. You can’t take a homeless person. Give them a nice car a nice house and a seat in the boardroom. They will throw it all away and go right back to doing drugs, cause that’s what they actually want to do unless you do all the steps necessary to actually change their mind just changing the circumstances doesn’t change the person.

An obvious situation that’s more firmly ingrained than we (choose to) realize. It’s next to impossible to convey “real life” to the sheltered few - mostly men. I’d say it’s complicated, but it’s not. Money does not dictate intellect, empathy, curiosity, compassion, personality.

Well, we need to stop electing these people and elect the Everyman, then. Is that possible? Sure. Probable? Not really. Term limits and cut the grift. No lobbying.

If the gap between the privileged and the average person in the U.S. widens but the standard of living of the average person keeps increasing, I’m not concerned that privileged people can be disconnected from reality. It opens the door for ‘reality coaches’ to teach the privileged what they’re not seeing.

Good observation but I think it is the history of humanity. Being aware and not perpetuating destructive policies is the answer, but if you are saying we need to remove privilege and vote for socialism that is not the answer. I agree private equity is ruining businesses.
