The duo were arrested with the assistance of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on May 25, 2024, at Ibiye, along the Lagos-Badagry expressway, as they attempted to cross the land border to deliver the consignment to Ghana. According to NDLEA's Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the husband and wife were found with 42 blocks of cocaine weighing 47.5 kilograms. A subsequent raid on their residence in Agbara, Ogun State, uncovered an additional eight blocks of cocaine weighing 10 kilograms, bringing the total seizure to 57.5 kilograms. "No less than 790 ampoules of the dangerous opioid weighing 5.273kg were equally seized from another member of the fentanyl syndicate, 48-year-old Chieze Ogechukwu Benjamin who was also arrested at Idumota market. Fentanyl, a lethal synthetic opioid, which is 100 times more potent than heroin is currently responsible for over 70% of overdose deaths as well as a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the US. "Two other persons: Olayiwola Aremu Kazeem, 37, and Ogunfowora Taofik Ajibola, 35, were arrested on Lagos Island in a different raid by NDLEA officers with 432 grams of methamphetamine recovered from them. 48 hours after carrying out coordinated raids of drug gangs perpetrating drug deals and related crimes in Gowon estate, the Taskforce, returned to 31 Rd and the adjoining streets of Wole Omo Osho, Bless Jah, Adenle Crescent and Okunola Rd in Mosan-Okunola LCDA in Alimosho LGA in a mop up exercise for the most extensive clean up operation to end the activities of drug peddling and use in the entire area. The operation which commenced at about 1800hrs of Thursday 28th November, 2024, led to the arrest of 43 suspected sellers of illicit substances and criminal elements who have converted the entire area into a safe haven for unlawful drug activities. A significant mix of different illicit drugs, viz a viz substances suspected to be Kanedian Loud Hemp, prescription drugs, Codeine Syrups, several Weighing Scales of illicit substances, Indian Hemp Crushers and knives were recovered from the suspects. Neighbouring shop owners who conspires and conceal the illicit drugs for the peddlers and same recovered in their shops were arrested while those in whose shops nothing incriminating was found were warned to concentrate on what is displayed for sales at their various shops and never to join in such illegal act. Also, all makeshift/ shanties used for the drug activities around the entire area were demolished during the operation and operatives were deployed with blackmaria stationed for sustenance. This is the tenth drug mule to be arrested at this Airport in the past two months. The team immediately intercepted the drug mule as she was making her way through immigration. She was immediately arrested, taken to a local hospital where a medical x-ray confirmed and detected foreign objects in her stomach. 101-YEAR-OLD GREAT-GRANDMOTHER ARRESTED AS NDLEA INTERCEPTS COCAINE IN FUFU Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 101-year-old woman for alleged drug dealing, intercepted cocaine concealed in edible cassava flour popularly known as fufu, and seized consignments of illicit drugs worth over N4.4 billion in separate operations across the country. The centenarian, identified as Esther Ogunmabo, was arrested on August 15, 2026, at Ilisan, Ogun State, with 90 grammes of skunk, a strain of cannabis, which she reportedly admitted selling in retail quantities. She told operatives that she turned to drug dealing after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire, adding that one of her daughters based in Lagos supplied her with cannabis every four days. NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), directed that she be granted bail and placed on counselling due to her advanced age, while her daughter was arrested. In Akwa Ibom, NDLEA operatives on August 21 intercepted a wooden boat conveying illicit drugs towards fishing settlements in Cameroon and arrested three suspects with 42.622kg of narcotics. The seizure included 42.06kg of skunk, 1.12kg of skunk, and 20 grammes of cocaine cleverly concealed inside a large wrap of edible cassava fufu, alongside 435 grammes of skunk. The Agency also recorded what it described as its first seizure of illicit drugs shipped from Thailand through the maritime corridor after intercepting two containers of cannabis indica, popularly known as Loud, at the Apapa and Lekki ports in Lagos. The Apapa container, declared to contain dry fish, rice, vehicle spare parts, turmeric soap and inverter batteries, contained 1,090.5kg of Thai Loud, while the Lekki container yielded 400kg. The combined street value of the consignments was put at over N4.4 billion. In the FCT, operatives intercepted three waybill packages containing 24,410 tramadol capsules inside a Hummer bus travelling from Enugu to Zuba on August 22. A follow-up operation in Niger State led to the arrest of the alleged owner, 28-year-old Sunday Eze, in Kontagora. In Ondo State, NDLEA operatives destroyed 10,000kg of skunk cultivated across four hectares at Ijare forest, Ifedore LGA, and separately recovered 210kg of skunk and a Toyota Camry at Ita-Ogbolu. Other operations led to the seizure of 1.325kg of methamphetamine and cannabis in Kwara; 4.68kg of assorted illicit drugs from a 65-year-old woman in Oyo; 73.3kg of skunk in Kano; 48kg of skunk from three family members near Seme in Lagos; and 14.4kg of Loud, 2.3kg of Colorado, tramadol and Rohypnol in Abia.
