We understand people are angry. We are angry too. Our country’s prison system should never be in this position. Why is it? The last Tory government closed 23 prisons. In 2024, we inherited a system on the brink of collapse. What have we done? We’ve begun a prison building programme that is the largest since the Victorian era. By the next election, more criminals will be behind bars than ever before. But we cannot simply build our way out of the crisis. We have to make changes to the sentencing regime too. Our Prime Minister looked again, and has ensured that rapists and certain child sex offenders are not subject to the changes - alongside 18,000 of the most serious offenders. He would have liked to have gone further but he also has a responsibility to ensure we have sufficient prison places for a functioning law and order system. We will always look at what more can be done. Where there are measures that can be taken to safely develop further capacity, we will take them. Meanwhile, we are investing record amounts in community punishments and our probation service - because public safety is always our priority. Sky News

[WATCH] SACP DISINVITED FROM ELECTIONS STRUCTURES We have resolved to strengthen the alliance we have also resolved to solve this impasse but in the meantime we will disinvite the SACP in all elections preparations platforms. We did not fight with the SACP but we have to deal with the reality of their resolution which we disagree with. Based on this notion we have decided to not invite them into any of our elections structures. But what we must make clear is that it is the structure that’s invited but it’s members can still participate in the elections, they must not be chased away based on the fact that they are SACP members.
