I've found that I really do need to have a few hobby projects going, or else, it's extremely hard to keep the passion alive.

I know this is a truth in what you said, but this doesn't happen at constant rate across the industry and teams; I beleive every team in the industry gets to have such a bone-breaking reality as well as good days, with ratio differing all the time.

I'm genuinely interested, how "quitters from the industry" basically survive? How can you maintain a living without working for some business, unless you own a business or sitting on a large investment pillow?
