I remember when NELFUND was launched. Some of the same naysayers now rallying against the newly launched FreeTV platform spoke badly about it. They mocked it, dismissed it and tried to frighten Nigerians. Then, students started seeing their school fees paid directly through NELFUND. They started receiving upkeep allowances. Families started feeling real relief. The same thing happened with the Tax Reform Laws. A current VP candidate, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, even went to a public place to lie that government would automatically start taking money (25%) out of people’s bank accounts by January/February 2026 in the name of tax. Today, the truth is clear for all to see. Most Nigerians and small businesses are paying less, not more. This is the pattern with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He does not just announce programmes. He thinks it through, implements, and builds ecosystems. FreeTV is not just about television. It is about opening up a whole new value chain in broadcasting, content, technology, jobs and local enterprise. If you are a young producer, filmmaker, content creator, scriptwriter, camera operator, editor, animator, sound engineer, installer, technician, app developer, call centre agent, decoder assembler, advertiser, regional storyteller, or small business owner, this is what FreeTV portends for you. 1. Over 100 channels from day one. 2. National, regional and state channels all free-to-air. 3. Content in Nigerian languages. 4. Free Mobile access through the FreeTV app. 5. Regional studios in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano and Benin for you to utilise. 6. Jobs in production, installation, technical support, local content creation and customer service. - For families, it means access to television without monthly subscription. You have been complaining about PayTV (e.g. DSTv) charges for too long. - For rural communities, it means satellite coverage that reaches every part of Nigeria. - For creatives, it means more platforms for Nigerian stories. - For small businesses, it means new advertising windows. - For young Nigerians, it means skills, jobs and opportunities across the broadcast value chain. This is what President Tinubu is building. They are not isolated interventions, but full ecosystems that create access, expand opportunity and unlock value for ordinary Nigerians. Remember this: The naysayers will shout first. The people will feel the impact later. That has always been the difference. Well done, Nigerian Broadcasting Commission and NIGCOMSAT for the partnership that brought this to life. ~ I am O’tega OGRA, ‘The Tiger’

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele(Taiwo Oyedele), at the launch of YouthCred for Entrepreneurs, said the initiative represents a major step in the Tinubu administration's vision of building a credit-driven economy that expands access to finance, empowers young entrepreneurs, and creates pathways to inclusive economic growth through responsible Consumer Credit. More Details: - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu established CREDICORP with the mandate of expanding access to consumer credit to half of all working Nigerians by 2030. - The initiative is aimed at building a credit economy where responsible borrowing and good credit history create opportunities for economic mobility. - The YouthCred programme was introduced as the largest consumer credit initiative designed specifically for young Nigerians. - Phase One, targeting NYSC members, provided credit education to over 51,000 young Nigerians, with more than 30,000 progressing to responsible credit access. - Phase Two, targeted at employed young Nigerians, has already reached more than 81,000 beneficiaries. - The Federal Government has now launched Phase Three – YouthCred for Entrepreneurs, with a target of empowering 500,000 young entrepreneurs nationwide. - The programme recognises that over 90% of Nigeria's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are micro-enterprises operated by individuals such as tailors, mechanics, farmers, content creators, caterers, artisans, fashion designers, and ride-hailing drivers. - Eligible Nigerians aged 18 to 35 years can access financing ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦2 million. - Loan eligibility is based on responsible credit behaviour, cash flow, and repayment capacity, rather than inherited wealth or traditional collateral requirements. - Financing will be delivered through regulated financial institutions, while beneficiaries will also receive support to formalise and scale their businesses. - The programme complements broader economic reforms, including the exemption of small companies from Company Income Tax, as well as the removal of VAT compliance and withholding tax burdens for small businesses since January 2026.

JUST IN: Prof. Ortuanya emerges 16th UNN vice chancellor, thanks President Tinubu, Governor Mbah for historic milestone Professor Simon Ortuanya has been appointed the 16th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), marking a historic moment as the first indigenous Vice Chancellor from the university’s host Enugu North Senatorial District, also known as Nsukka Zone, since it was established in 1960. In his acceptance speech after the announcement was made at the meeting of the Governing Council held at the Enugu campus of the university on Sunday, Prof. Ortuanya paid tribute to key figures who he said played vital roles in making the milestone possible. “In a special way, I appreciate our President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the transformation he has brought to bear in education in Nigeria. We are indeed proud of him, and very proud of his administration,” he said. He also extended appreciation to the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, for what he described as his exceptional drive and tenacity in helping actualize the long-standing aspiration of the Nsukka people. “Let me appreciate our Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his determination and commitment, for his doggedness and single-mindedness in making sure that today becomes a reality,” the new Vice Chancellor said. Prof. Ortuanya also acknowledged several others for their contributions to his emergence, such as the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam; the Chancellor and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ojaja II; the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Engr. Kayode Olubunmi Ojo; members of the selection board; professors; academic and non-academic staff; students; and the entire university community for being part of the historic moment. Reaffirming his commitment to service, Prof. Ortuanya pledged to “serve this university with all my heart and with all my strength,” promising to “reposition the University of Nigeria, to bring its glorious days back.” “We will redeem our name; we will rebuild the confidence. We will build new dreams, tread the path that has never been walked upon before,” he vowed. He called on all stakeholders, academic and non-academic, to join hands with him in the five-year journey to restore the university’s founding vision “to restore the dignity of man,” adding, “I am extending my hands of friendship and fellowship and brotherhood to each and every one; after all, we are one family.” Earlier, while announcing the new Vice Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Engr. Kayode Olubunmi Ojo noted that the process began under the previous Governing Council with 26 candidates shortlisted. “The process was rigorously and fairly done, with proper questions asked on matters concerning the growth of the university,” Ojo said. “The council wanted a professor who is sound in education, with an extensive network outside the university that can attract a lot of patronage. Prof. Ortuanya was found more than qualified to lead this great university, turn it around, and uplift it from decay in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, especially the first-generation universities, of which UNN is the second of the five.” Prof. Ortuanya will succeed the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam, and is expected to steer the affairs of the University of Nigeria for the next five years. A distinguished legal scholar and administrator, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, SJD, FCIArb, FCIA, is a Professor of Law and the current Dean, Faculty of Law at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), where he has been credited with transforming the faculty’s academic environment and enhancing the global competitiveness of its graduates.
