New: Joe Rogan voices his frustrations about Christianity to scientist Jared Diamond as he questions it’s foundation because Paul basically created the religion but he never met Jesus in his lifetime: “It would have been really nice if Jesus wrote some things down.” CONTEXT: Here’s what makes the question historically interesting: Paul apparently did not know Jesus during Jesus’ lifetime. His claim to have encountered him came afterward through what Paul described as a revelation or appearance of the risen Christ. Yet Paul's authentic letters contain the earliest surviving writings in the New Testament, earlier than the written Gospels making him one of our earliest surviving sources for what the Jesus movement believed. And Jesus himself left behind no known surviving writings. But there’s a major wrinkle in the argument that Paul simply “created Christianity”: Paul says that after his conversion he personally met Cephas, Peter, and James, whom he calls “the Lord’s brother.” Even more importantly, scholars have identified material inside Paul's letters that appears to be Christian tradition Paul himself inherited rather than invented including an early formula about Jesus' death, burial, resurrection and appearances in 1 Corinthians 15. So Paul had enormous influence. But Christianity clearly existed before Paul became a Christian. ROGAN: “We’re taking the entire religion from this guy saying…I never met him.” DIAMOND: “It was two people. It was Jesus and there was Paul. Paul was the great organizer.” ROGAN: “It’s fascinating that Paul never met him and that Jesus never wrote anything down. We have no first person accounts of Jesus.” IMPORTANT NOTES: The chronology is what makes the argument so provocative. Jesus dies. His followers spread his teachings orally. Paul joins the movement later after claiming an encounter with the risen Jesus. Paul's letters become some of the earliest Christian documents that still survive. The Gospel of Mark probably isn't written until around 65–75 CE, decades after Jesus' death. Other Gospels follow later. But Paul's own writings simultaneously undermine the simplest version of the “Paul invented Christianity” argument because Paul openly acknowledges that there were apostles and traditions before him. So maybe the better historical question isn't: “Did Paul invent Christianity?” It's: How much of the Christianity practiced 2,000 years later comes directly from Jesus and how much comes from Paul and the generations of people who preserved, interpreted and organized his teachings afterward?
