We all condemned the criminal assault on activist @p_oruche at the Benin airport by people offended by her views. Most of us agree that in a democracy, speech is protected and jungle justice has no place, even when offense is caused. We said the same when Deborah was murdered for what she allegedly said in a student WhatsApp study group. Yet in the aftermath of the brutal assault and abduction of Don Pedro Obaseki, this was her contribution to the conversation. How is this ‘reasoning’ materially different from the logic used by those who insist that offensive speech justifies violence, including murder for blasphemy. If we cannot apply the same moral standard consistently, then a new Nigeria truly remains out of reach.

My husband and I adopted a 10.5 year old dog. Not because we were looking for another dog, but because she sat at the shelter for 3 months without a single person inquiring about her or meeting her and we didn’t want her dying alone. She wasn’t with a rescue but people in the rescue community were networking her because she was the sweetest and was every shelter volunteer’s favorite dog. They would even let her hang out in the office with them. I heard about her and the next day we went to meet her and adopted her. She was covered in ticks when we brought her home, and it took a lot of vet visits, treatments, trial and error, and patience to finally heal her from it. There were moments where it felt overwhelming, but she was worth every bit of effort. We weren’t sure how long she would live but we didn’t care, because it wasn’t about us, it was about her. Thankfully she was with us for three years and passed just two months ago at 13.5 years old, which is ancient. She was an amazing dog and I loved her just as much as all my other dogs. Seniors are the best and they’re just as deserving of a loving home as any other dog. 📹treatsnatcher

This is why I felt so out of it. 10 years today. I take solace in the fact that my mother loved us well and did her best for us. She was a fighter, protector and provider. She endured harassment by the SAP in the Apartheid era to keep us safe. She was the keeper of secrets, my secrets in particular. She loved all of us equally and never spoke a bad word about one of my siblings to me. She endured the loss of a child with dignity and later in life would be the matriarch of the family. Keeping us together when it seems we were drifting apart. Whoever came to visit, never left empty handed. I remember Geraldine and Jasper , adopted kids that she fed and nurtured through their formative years. She was there at my lowest points in life and never failed to support me.. She could cook up a storm in the kitchen and sew dresses for us and if Matthew Duiker would allow it she would make him an underpants. The death of my brother almost destroyed her, but again she rose from the ashes to keep the home fires burning during the most terrible times her life. She loved all her grand kids equally and often talked of Cheyenne and Edwynne and just wished she could see them. Go in peace my sweet mother. Till we meet again. Hamba Kahle. lala uxolo. When we first started recording Prizefighter, Gracie Abrams and Aaron Dessner were working upstairs at Electric Lady. We’ve followed Gracie’s career from the beginning, right from when she started, and think she has turned into one of the world’s most interesting artists with the most amazingly lazer-like sensibilities, taste, and choices. She was there the day the record started and in turn became the fairy godmother of this record, just tapping songs with her magic wand. So when it came to it, we asked if she wanted to sing on anything, and she picked Badlands. We are so grateful as she turned it into more than we dreamt it could ever be.
