For years, a relentless political campaign has sought to portray the Gandhi family as the embodiment of corruption and anti-nationalism. Repetition of allegations, however, is not the same as proof. In the last press conference, it was asked what to do when the democratic structure is not working. What we are doing is making it absolutely clear to the people of India what has happened. We are informing the people that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister are not legitimately in government. Analysis is one thing, but deliberate mischief with what he said, what he wrote, and what he did is quite another — and totally unacceptable. And who are the forces that have launched this project? We all know that they have worked for years and years—for decades—and finally, here they are. They belong to an ideology that had no role whatsoever in our freedom movement, that had no role whatsoever in the making of our Constitution. In fact, they even burnt it and were totally against it. It is an ideology that long ago fanned an atmosphere of hate that ultimately led to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi ji. His killers today continue to be glorified by its adherents. In the wake of the student-led and public uprising that toppled the previous autocratic regime, a rare and transformative opportunity has emerged to realise that common purpose. However, this opportunity is fragile. It must not be undermined by the schemes of exiled autocrats and their allies or by unnecessary divisions within the democratic forces dedicated to the nation’s progress. Vigilance and unity are imperative to safeguard this moment of potential. We need to continue putting the country's needs ahead of any personal or political gain. Establishing democratic norms won't be an easy path but I have full faith in the people of Bangladesh and their will to realise that norm.
