Massive protests erupted in Sulaimani today as civil servants took to the streets in solidarity with a group of teachers who have been on a hunger strike for seven days, demanding a lasting resolution to the ongoing salary crisis. The large turnout was fueled, in part, by controversial remarks from the KRG PM’s spokesperson, who accused some hunger strikers of colluding with anti-Kurdish factions in Baghdad. The protesters’ key demands include: 1. Depositing their salaries in federally owned state banks rather than through the KRG’s MyAccount system. 2. Ensuring the timely distribution of salaries each month. 3. Reinstating promotions that have been suspended since 2014.

The Iraqi Cabinet’s session, chaired by PM Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, ended without resolving the salary crisis affecting over 1.2 million civil servants in the Kurdistan Region awaiting May and June payments. However, a five-minister committee—including Finance, Planning, Justice, Health, and Higher Education—was formed to draft a new oil and salary agreement based on proposals from Baghdad and Erbil, to be submitted for final approval, reports Zoom News' Akam Fahmi.

Teachers from Connaught School for Girls were on strike for three weeks during a critical exam period for their students. This resulted in students counter-protesting and demanding that the teachers return to school. Now, I support the right for workers to strike. But look at this picket line. Keffiyehs and Palestinian flags. An all-girls school in London has nothing to do with Gaza or the Middle East. Why are these teachers choosing Palestine over their students?

According to the President of the group, Adomako Korankye, the delay has affected about 700 newly recruited teachers. He also disclosed that several others, aside from the 700, are yet to receive their staff IDs, a prerequisite for processing salary payments. #JoyNews
